I'm wondering how much a name on a resume, like an ivy league school, matters to employers? I was accepted into Cornell and USC and I'm majoring in communications. Both schools are great schools and have strong communications programs. Cornell is an ivy league school. USC is ranked in the top 5 in the country for it's Annenberg School of Communications. Cost is not an issue for me, I have great scholarships for both schools. If you know of anyone who has graduated from those schools, especially in communications, that would be awesome. Thanks!

Cornell is certainly more prestigious, but you’re majoring in a field where internships/work experience will ultimately matter more in your employability than school prestige. Internships will be easier to find in LA than Ithaca.

If you are going to have summer internships, then Cornell may be the better choice given the host of opportunities in NY. If not, USC might be better.

option 3 vanderbilt or option 4 carnegie mellon would be better then option 1 or 2.

He didn’t say he was accepted to or even applied to CMU or Vandy.

Vanderbilt? for communications? My D was laughed out of an admitted student open house for even mentioning that was her intended field of study…

To the OP: You don’t mention where you would like to be after graduation or where you are coming from…Annenberg will open certain doors on the West Coast that Cornell may or may not…

Cornell doesn’t scream “communications connections” to me…but maybe other people will chime in…

Of the two Annenberg is definitely better in communications, however Cornell’s Ivy status does give it a fair amount of cashet, particularly on the east coast. (West Coasters aren’t as awed by Ivies.) Some of the decision may depend on where ultimately you’d like to live and what you see yourself doing career/grad school-wise after you finish your udnergrad.

Crossposted with rodney, who clearly thinks along similar lines as me :)

USC has a far superior comm program to Cornell’s, there’s just no competition. Cornell’s sits, somewhat awkwardly, in the Ag school and has science requirements that correspond to no reasoned logic.

If your goal is to land on the West Coast after college, USC seems the obvious choice. East Coast? Hard to say. Cornell will be much better connected in general, but Annenberg specifically will carry a fair amount of weight in communications job apps, even in NYC. Outside the NE and West, probably little difference.

Big, big difference is LA LA land vs small town upstate NY, USC trophied football/b ball sports craze vs Cornell strengths in hockey/wrestling.

Where do you see yourself?
