I heard that the acceptance rate at Columbia is slightly lower than that at Stanford, but in my opinion, Stanford is more famous than Columbia.

so what do you guys think?

thank you in advance

thank you in advance

I love Stanford. I don't like Columbia. cough ugly Columbia buildings cough hands down.

Since when does a lower accept rate mean a school is better? Some schools (like columbia) get tons of "what the hell" applicants from places like NYC.

Well, Columbia's an ivy . . . I'm not so sure about Stanford being more famous than Columbia though. It probably depends on your location.

Stanford has better Grad and Professional school placement, is ranked higher, has a real campus feeling and is very pretty, even though columbia has a very nice campus too. At the undergraduate level Stanford is only lower than HYP other than that Stanford is honestly the 4th best undergraduate institution in the country.

Columbia is a great school but it's definitely better for grad school than for undergrad. So I would say for undergrad, Stanford is better. Columbia is in NYC and it's easy for students to get lost there--have you seen the campus? Now, obviously Columbia has advising and all that, but it's just so big and no one can argue that it's warm and cozy and supportive...at least not as much as Stanford. Did you know at Stanford, they have free tutors for each subject who live in the dorms? Awesome!

Just because a school is an Ivy doesn't mean it's famous. Columbia, Brown and Dartmouth are nowhere near the level of Harvard, Yale, Pton.

And neither school is "better"

At the undergraduate level Stanford is only lower than HYP other than that Stanford is honestly the 4th best undergraduate institution in the country.

Sure, it's usually paired with HYPM, but that doesn't mean it's the 4th best undergraduate institution. It means that it's among the 5 most prestigious colleges in the country.
By your logic, Harvard would provide one of the best (if not the best) undergraduate experiences in the country, which I would argue is false.

Academically, Stanford and Columbia are on par with one another. As far as overall reputation, Stanford may have an edge.

thanks for you guys' input

anyway, I love Stanford..

same here. Yay

oxford is better plus it is more prestige lol!!11eleven

Stanford has more international recognition than Columbia. Just because Columbia is an Ivy League School doesn't mean it's better.

Hello? They are two completely different but equally excellent schools. Gritty urban life or a slice of Ca suburbia? Engineering or classics? Do your research!

In Texas, at least, here's how people see school prestige (US Schools Only)

Harvard, Yale

Princeton, Stanford

Dartmouth, Brown, Duke, Columbia, etc.

I like Stanford because it's pretty much top-notch in a wide range of fields. Furthermore, I feel like Columbia (which a MUCH MUCH larger grad population than undergrad) focuses too much on graduate education and has no real campus because everyone goes downtown to do anything.

Really? I perceive Princeton as prestigious as Harvard/Yale.
Stanford is awesome. Really don't have something as silly as prestige get to you, because Columbia and Stanford will make people say "wow" if you go to either school. now a real difference may be b/t Stanford and (some generic college name) University. It all depends. NY or Palo Alto?

Oh, that's not very fair. Stanford, though an excellent school, has a pretty ho-hum location. There's not much to do in the area--the only perk is the weather, I think.

People on CC are always talking about HYPS so I'm assuming Stanford > Columbia if only in name/prestige alone.

I would say Stanford is more respected academically. Columbia has really benefitted from the renaissance of the American cities as its number of applications has tripled in the last 15 years. Columbia's acceptance rate is slightly lower only because of the current immense popularity of NYC.
