Which is better: getting a C or getting an F and then retake course?

I havn't been going to class or doing the homework for my psychology class and right now I have about a C in that class. So I was wondering about the following plans I could take to maximize my chances of transferring to a good UC school:

1) Try to maintain that grade since there's no way I will be able to pull it up to a B or an A by the end of the semester.
2) Purposely fail the class by getting a D or an F so I can retake it next semester to get an A.

Which plan do you guys think is better?

Can you take a W? Change the class to pass fail?

I agree with walnut, first exhaust your resources trying to take it as a pass fail course or with a W. Sometimes you can petition a grade if you have a legit reason and change it to a W or P/NP.

You can retake the course if you get an F, but you need to be absolutely sure you can get an A if you want it to look decent on your application/transcript. The F will always be there - should you get one - but at least the other grade will replace it's effect on your GPA .

If it is not a critical course, the C might not hurt as bad as it will to your GPA since you cannot replace it.

Try the first two options first. Good luck.

I think some schools don't care for repeat grades...becareful.

I know for a fact that some schools do NOT care if you have repeated a class. They will only use the grade that you first earned. In that case, an A would not help at all...I believe that this is true for some grad schools as well. I believe that the LSAC will factor in the F if you apply for law school before they send it to prospective law schools. Definitely look more into it, not just for transfer, but in case you also want to go to grad school.

You should first try petitioning for the W.
It's very unlikely your dean or Committee on Academic Appeals will grant you this, but it is worth a try.

get a W then repeat the course, dont get an F or a C.

I'm only interested in transferring to a UC.

Do UCs count the grade that you got from taking a repeated course? Or will they not care for the new grade, and only factor into your GPA the grade you received the first time you took the class?

Also, if it matters, I'm a computer science major. I'm getting mostly A's in the classes required for my major, but am not doing so well in humanities. Do you guys think I'll still have a shot at UCLA and UCB?

"I'm getting mostly A's in the classes required for my major"

What do you mean mostly, try to get A's in all of them, and try to keep up atleast a B in those humanities.

well, i have a D for my calulus III, and then repeat it get A. the reason is i broke my leg during final exam. for this class, no final means directly a D.
but at least, i have already been accepted by UCD

you broke your leg DURING the final exam????? You didn't study did you.....

it is the day before math final, and it is an accident. i tried to contact the teacher, but she said already give me a D due to her policy for this class. :(
