money and fame

Why do you have to decide right now? Are you deciding between med school and graduate school in computer science? Or are you asking a theoretical question so you can pick a college? If you are applying to colleges now, you can get a degree in computer science but just make sure you have the courses that are required for medical school. You don’t have to major in biology or chemistry to go to medical school.

Medicine- lots of doctors are telling their kids to not become doctors.

The problems: You have to deal with insurance companies (for which you don’t get paid). The cost to open your own office is very high, so many young doctors join existing group practices until they get enough money to open their own practice. That means that you don’t earn as much money (you get a salary, and you might get a bonus) but it is less risky financially and you don’t have to be on call all the time (so you have better quality of life). But with the push towards electronic health records (which will increase the cost to set up a practice) and the coming changes in health care, I think the solo practioner office will become less and less frequent. Also, medicine is becoming more and more of a “cookbook” type job, with guidelines dominating treatment of common diseases. If you like making up your own way of approaching things, you may be frustrated.

Being in medical school and residency is extremely time consuming. You will work very, very long hours, and must have good stamina.

The good parts:

Its a high prestige occupation, which will probably be well paid, even with the changes coming. The changes coming will provide opportunities for people who figure out how to take advantage of them. Actually, a background in both medicine and computer science could be desirable in the future as electronic health records become more common. (Being a doctor doesn’t mean you HAVE to practice medicine - there are lots of doctors who do other things in which they use the medical degree) .
