Which is better: UMich or Northwestern?

University of Michigan (Ann Arbor) or Northwestern University? I'm interested in engineering and/or Pre-Med for my undergraduate major.

I heard Northwestern has a really intense premed program.

Northwestern is more prestigious (*Hides before Alexandre and RML try to verbally castrate me).

MrPrince, I don’t “verbally castrate” people for stating partial truths. To some people, primarily high school students who choose to blindly follow the USNWR college rankings, Northwestern is indeed more prestigious than Michigan. Academics and recruiters do not differentiate between those two great schools.

I would say for Engineering, Michigan actually has the edge, albeit a small one. For pre-med, I would say there is no difference between the two schools.

USNWR? And thanks, I live in MI, so my dad really wants me to go there although I like the idea of going to NU and living in Evanston for a change. I understand both schools probably are on equal footing in terms of academics though.

Northwestern is private, which is generally, but not always, a better choice in these uncertain economic times.

Hmmm…by “better choice,” do you mean will ensure greater success in the future (more prestigious reputation among employers)?

I think flyaround is referring to the financial stability of the university. However, Michigan is not a typical public university where endowment is concerned. Michigan’s endowment of $6.6 billion is the 6th largest among universities, behind only HYPSM. Northwestern’s endowment is also huge, but not quite as large as Michigan’s.

From what I’ve heard, Northwestern has a great premed program and a decent engineering program as well. I don’t really know all that much about UMich except that it is a very good school in general.

You want to go premed so I assume that you plan on getting your MD? Perhaps you then should try and save money on the undergrad and go to the grad school of your choice. So that said see who gives you the cheapest price after scholarships and grants and go there. Remember it will be where you get your MD from that matters for your career as a doctor.

Yeah, both are good…I’m so torn because I’m pretty sure I can get into U of M, and it’s in-state, so tuition would be much cheaper. Then again, I absolutely LOVE Northwestern’s campus, and I know it’s probably the more well-known school and thus may have a higher level of prestige. And while it seems as though the schools’ academia is of the same high quality, I really like the idea of going to a private, smaller university - especially if it’s in Chicago!

Here is the USNWR undergraduate ratings for engineering:

Notice what school is #7.

Good point, rjkofnovi. By the way, are you from Novi!?!

If Michigan is MUCH cheaper than this is a no brainer. Just consider yourself lucky that you live in one of the few states that has a stellar flagship university. NU is a very good school, as is Michigan. If you do well at U-M, you can go anywhere for medical school.

Very true. I do live in MI; do you go to MI?

*UofM? (Michigan)

^^yes

10 charac

Awesome. You’re from Novi I assume? Neat.

Northwestern will offer you a better education merely because you will get better access to faculty, resources, etc. Both are great institutions but when one has 30K+ students and the other has a fraction of that, you get my point. On the endowment side, you have to measure apples to apples. Both endowments are similar in size yet Northwestern has a FAR higher endowment per capita. I would rather spend an additional 10-20K in tuition cost and get 10x back in resources (think ROI).

It’s more like $30,000.00 more per year in total costs all things being equal. That’s a quantifiable number. Your 10X better nonsense remark is not. Furthermore NU is not worth anywhere near the extra $120,000.00 it would cost an IS student from Michigan over four years. Trust me, save your money and go to Michigan.
