I am currently a high school junior in the Philadelphia Suburbs, main line area. With the city being about 25 minutes away, there is definitely a lot of opportunity nearby. My dream school is Pomona College. I am not yet sure of what I will major in, but pre-med courses for sure.

I am currently looking into two possible summer activities.

I would really appreciate some feedback on which would prepare me better for the medical world, health care provider, and also which looks better on my college application. In the first program, a research project is done which could be beneficial when applying to schools. With some schools, such as Pomona, one can send in science projects as a kind of supplement.

Hi ,interesting question. Do you have more details on the Penn program, I could not find much on that website.
BTW, the Summer@Brown program “So you want to be a doctor” might be something for you to look at. It is very expensive, but gives you a well rounded feel for a career in medicine. Maybe others can charm in and have an opinion about that too.
Good luck.

One of my top school choices would be the Brown PLME, if I get were to be accepted I would definitely go, even over Pomona.

There really isn’t any more information available about the Penn volunteering program. I’m just worried it will be the usual, running errands and what-not.

I would go for the research one for sure. Paid research positions are not that easy to come by, and to have one in the medical field where they are likely to let you do some ‘real work’ (not just bottle washing) is an excellent opportunity. You are lucky you live in the area (my D has been looking for something similar, but there is nothing in our state ). I think it would do more for your college application.

Thanks for the feedback! I am leaning towards this research program as well, seems like a great opportunity to do some real exploring, and not just the dirty work that no one else wants to do…
