around where you live or just in your opinion or w.e.

mcgill or carnegie mellon?

Mcgill is considered below NYU-CAS (#37). Perhaps you can find the thread where a guy was leaning towards NYU-GSP and paying 45k a year over going to McGill.

If McGill was ranked on UsNews it would probably not be top 50. I don't like to insult schools but if you want to work in the United States AT ALL you would not even CONSIDER McGill vs Carnegie Mellon.

really i know lots of very successful people from Mcgill

i was soooo excited yesterday about carnegie mellon, but now im starting to wonder if that excitment was because i wanted to go there or because i never thought i would make it there

i love everything about mcgill...and i dont know if im ready to give up that dream...esp since i can always go to grad school in the united states but i actually LOVE canada

but idk...im alittle too confused right now...lol

I dunno how to roll my eyes but I'd do that to your response.

How many of those "successful" people work at Microsoft/Google/Morgan/Sachs/IBM/Amazon/etc. right after graduation with 72k avgs for Comp Sci and 55ks-60ks for other fields (with a majority going to top firms).
There is a reason Forbes ranked Carnegie Mellon the "Hottest place to get a job".

Can you go to a community college and be successful? Yes
Can you go to Mcgill and be successful? Yes
Will it be much harder getting a top job in the United States if you go to Mcgill vs other top 25's in the U.S.? YES.

"since i can always go to grad school in the united states but i actually LOVE canada"

If you are 100% sure you want to go to grad school and not get a job out of undergrad AND the discrepancy between money is too large then I would consider McGill. In all other cases I'd go to CMU.

i know people who are more successful going to a normal school than people going to "top 25"...it depends on who you and your personality...college means nothing after your first job

and carnegie mellon accepted EVERYONE from my school who applied so it makes me question how selective they really are

Why would you post this and then argue with me?
I can pull out a million stats to prove that CMU is more selective than Mcgill but there is no point.
Obviously your mind is already made up. If you wanna pass up CMU for McGill, it's your choice. Good luck.

your right i dont feel like arguing with you anyways

and Mcgill is an amazing school...i dont know where you get your info...goodbye

Lets face it. There are a ton of prestige whores on CC. If I had to chose between Yale and a state school, I would probably pick Yale because the campus is a lot better. If I had to chose between Yale and a school like Emory, then I would probably pick Yale because it is more prestigious, but I wouldn't do that if I was totally in love with going to Emory. I think you should go where you want to go. There are 3400 4-year colleges in the US. Even if McGill was ranked as #35 or #50 by USNWR, there is not a lot of difference between the prestige of CMU versus McGill. Prestige depends on who you talk to anyway. McGill is an order of magnitude more prestigious than CMU worldwide.

Montreal would have it on Pittsburgh, especially if you speak some French.

a person from my school last year choose mcgill over columbia...and shes sooooo happy at mcgill now she says she never regretted it.

Interesting
Why would people care so much about prestige?
(I do, too, though. I'm just curious...)

i dont care...i was just curious...i didnt think people would take it personally lol...i would NEVER choose a school for prestige...id rather be happy

just like later on in life id rather be happy and middle class than miserable and rich :)

ahha ahah funny thread. prestige-wise i'd say CMU wins.

go to the college you love but McGill can't hold a candle to Carnegie Mellon. Nobody has heard of it and it is only heard of if you want to live in Canada or other countries.

I say if you wanna live in U.S. go to CMU otherwise just go 2 mcgill if u love canada and wanna lives there.

I think prestige is just a form of brand-name consciousness. It is the same thing as wanting to wear the most fashionable clothing or driving the most expensive car. On one level, it is looking for outside validation instead of trusting your own instincts. The tendency is certainly excelerating in American society. I recognize that a Mercedes does have a better ride than a Chevy just as HYP would be more fun to attend than (blank). However, Rolex watches are not as expensive as they are because of manufacturing costs and people don't buy them because they keep better time. For a lot of people, going to a prestigious college is just a way of feeling better about themselves. Another factor is that there is a societal view currently present that people need to have the best of everything in order to be successful in life.

McGill is of course not rated by USNWR. The Selectivity factors for some colleges in PR's Best 351 might be a way to make comparisons. Some sample colleges are:

Harvard - 99
Yale - 99
Princeton - 99
UPenn - 99
Brown - 99
Cornell - 98
Emory - 93
Tufts - 97
WUSTL - 97
NYU - 90
CMU - 92
Rutgers - 88
McGill - 95

roflmao lol yea we all know how good rutgers is.

That is a crappy ranking.

I've lived in NYC my whole life and I can tell you that we LOVE NYU and we know about CMU. But who the hell has heard of mcgill. Nobody. man c heck out top firms and u see how many mcgill kids? yea like none.

op just wanted opinions man and i gave an opinion.

mcgill is a very well known school worldwide

"man c heck out top firms and u see how many mcgill kids? yea like none."

you so made that up :)

just not in U.S.

i make it up?

u think i make up the fact that i walk by freaking morgan stanley's building every day and nobody who interns is from mcgill or canada. There are oxford/cambridge peopple though.

Most come from harvard and ivies and stuff but mcgill man seriously man get ur facts rite.
