Which is easiest: Linear Algebra, Intro to Differential Eqs, or Vector Calculus

Based on how it was at your university, which of these math classes was the easiest? I'm coming along a difficult quarter and want to take the easier of these classes so I don't end up killing myself with work.

I had a terrible linear algebra teacher, and I really did not understand what was going on until much later into the semester, until we learned most everything in the book. Like, he would talk about the span of vectors and eignvalues and stuff way before any of us knew what he was talking about, but at the end, I think it's a pretty easy course, as long as you have a decent teacher.

However, I'm more of a calculus-type math person, so I'd think that vector calc (do you mean multivariate?) was pretty easy, and diff eqs is only an expansion of those ideas. I think it really depends on whether you are better at abstract stuff (if you are, do LA). Otherwise, just go shead and do calc

I think calculus, linear algebra, diff eq
but it all depends on who you have

vector calc here isn't the same as multivariable. these three classes are required after you complete multivariable but you can take them in any order

Oh, all right. I don't think I've take vector calc then. I think LA is more abstract (so if you have better spacial awareness, it's probably better). If you're better at normal calc-type stuff, I'd go with the other two.

In my opinion
1-diff equations
2-vector calculus
3-linear algebra

But keep in mind that's only how I see it :)

For me DE was a fair bit easier and more enjoyable than Calc, no experience with LA.

LA's the easiest for me.. since I'm a proof person
calculus's too much "just do it this way".. ODE's just.. "remember the trick"

vector calc/multivar is very visual at times so that's also a factor- if you're good at seeing things in 3-D, then it's just a translation of calcI/II into 3-D

DS says "it totally depends on the teacher." He has taken ODE, MV (that included vector and Lin Alg. Based on my observations, I would say LinAlg has been the easiest for him, but he also does a lot of programming, so it makes intuitive sense to him. YMMV (your mileage may vary).

what's ODE?

ODE - ordinary differential equations
PDE - partial differential equations

ODE is the easiest. Straight memorization.

^^^ Yeah I agree. ODE is just memorization of formulas and its applications. But the difficult part of ODE is the amount of calculations involved. Basically you have to be good at integrals and partial fractions. A little linear algebra would help. Also if you did really well in integral calculus, then you shouldn't have a problem with diff eqs.

thanks ken
