I often hear of students getting 800 on the writing section of the SAT, yet I rarely hear of 12's on the writing section of the ACT. Kids who score 34+ on the ACT always seem to have 8, 9, or 10 on the writing section. Even 11 seems really rare.

Just me with a bad sample or are they equally common? I haven't been able to find any published numbers on this, so if anyone has any, post the link. Percentiles, I can find, I'm looking for raw numbers.

The ACT equivalent of a SAT Writing 800 is a 36, not a 12 (which is just the essay score). Neither ACT, Inc., nor CollegeBoard provides percentiles more specific than “99” and “99+” and both an 800 and 36 obviously fall into that range. As for essay 12’s, people taking the SAT more often get 10’s and 11’s as well- 12’s are supposed to be tough to get and a 10 is good enough for an 800- but you need a 12 to get a Writing+Essay 36* on the ACT. I can’t see any reason why a 12 would be tougher on the ACT than in the SAT, though.

The ACT gives you two Writing scores- one (sans essay) is actually factored into the composite. The other is with the essay weighed in.
