for an out of state female is it more difficult to gain admission to uva or w&m?

i think the admission rates are similar (mid to high 30s-%) but because uva is almost 70% in state, i'd say it's more difficult.
not sure though, i got into both honors programs

actually UVa's out of state rate is 30%, don't know about W&M though

both are the same chances pretty much for out of state females; unfortunately, it's usually easier for males to get into than females (just because there tend to be more qualified females applying -- but of course this varies year to year)

The only major difference that I've noticed between UVa and W&M in their chances is that W&M seems to look more at grades and UVA puts more emphasis on the essays. That's just my observation from a school with about 60 people from my graduating class of 140 going to either W&M or UVa.

But anyways: both schools have pretty much the same difficulty with getting in.

Try "hardest courses at high school" also, For example, UVA and W&M wants IB students as #1 criteria. Please google UVA president interview in January on what they look for. And you are wrong about chances for men v women. I don't know where K_jo gets the info or its hot shot school but that is pure bull that 45% of the high school class is accepted at the 2 best colleges in VA and 2 or the top 50 colleges in VA... I think we would see a news story on that and not a fable.

Proof k_jo would be nice, otherwise, what a tale.... I am LOL...

I think it would be more difficult to get into W&M as a female just because W&M has more females and I think males have an easier time getting in as compared to UVA because the male/female ratio is pretty much the same. Both schools are extremely hard to get into out of state though..good luck.

I can tell you from my graduation class --- I came from MLW Govs, a magnet school in Richmond - we are the number 2 school in the state second only to the famed TJ Sci Tech (where about 200 of their kids were accepted to UVA last year alone.) My actual stats said 60 people from my school went to UVA and W&M, BTW we had a much higher acceptance rate to those schools than the people that actually went there. For a lot of people at my school, UVA and WM were "safety schools". Of couse, of the people that didn't go to UVA or WM, a lot went up NorthEast to Ivies. Oh, and our average SAT grade last year was a 1365, average GPA unweighted a 3.7.

So before you jump down my throat over this, it was definitely true. Maybe not your school, but at mine, it's a normal occurance every year.

If you want more proof, I have our "Senior College Decision" list, and I think it is also posted on our school website somewhere http://www.gsgis.k12.va.us

Interesting UVA numbers here:

What! More than 50% percent of people in-state that apply get in....that's not bad...that's pretty easy. Does anyone know what W&M acceptance rate is?

First of all...

The state of Virginia requires that all state funded colleges/ universities (including UVA and WM) include Virginians in their pool of admitted students over out of state students at a rate of two to three (meaning 66.7% of accepted students must be from VA). This is because Virginia feels that its taxpayer money should directly support its residents.

UVA feels that it is being held back by this policy and is therefor seeking a change in their charter which would allow them to make more decisions independently.

With that being said, Virginia has very good public education in most areas (particularly in northern va and around the richmond metro area) which produces many students capable of succeeding at UVA- many of these students would not be admitted if they lived outside of the state, but hey, c'est la vie...
