My son took the SAT in January and then again in March. In January his percentiles were 77/98/87, but in March they were 92/90/87. However, he actually scored 10 points lower as a total in March than January.

Clearly when you average percentiles, March is a better score...but the actual score itself is slightly better for January. So...for colleges who say they only count one sitting, which one would they use?

I would think scores are more important. However, if he was 77th percentile in one section in January, it probably means he scored significantly lower in that section, which may look worse than a well-balanced score.

Thanks. I think the well balanced scores might look better too, but I’m afraid that the schools that only take single sitting will just input the January scores, and the only way to prevent that would be to not send them in. However, not so sure that is a good idea either!
