Are people from other countries, say when applying for a job more familiar with a UCLA degree or a Berkeley degree. Which school is more well renowned around the world CAL or Berkeley. I know my dad's cousin who is from Chad said during his primary education(elementary) that H.S student were trying to apply to UCLA and this was back in 1960's. When I asked him about Berkeley he just said he knew nothing about. So which school is more well known globally?

my cousin from overseas only knows about ucla. i think it might be the movies that she watches…

You heard it from UCHopeful12, folks. If you want to snag some of the best jobs in the country of Chad, they’re looking for Bruin graduates.

In terms of national recognition/rankings, Cal is the winner. UCLA is good too, but I don’t know which is known more globally.

Whoa! when several of my friends and relatives (who live outside the US) told me that UCLA is extremely famous, and that they and all of their friends virtually knew nothing about Berkeley, I just thought to myself "yeah, right  ", but then I kept hearing the same thing over and over, and now finally, I stumble upon this thread. All of this seems to be lending credibility to the fact that UCLA does indeed have a much better reputation internationally (who woulda thought!)

UCLA is the most famous UC, whereas UCB is the most prestigious UC. i.e. if you’re an average person who knows nothing about universtities, you’re more likely to know about UCLA than you are about berkeley. This is because people only know certain set of universities. A non-academic is more likely to know about UCLA than Upenn (unless you live in pennsylvania) but that doesn’t mean that it’s a better university (far from the truth imo), just that UCLA is more famous among non-academics, while Upenn is vastly more prestigious.

if you’re involved in academics, then the two are regarded similarly for undergraduates, but berkeley is regarded much better for graduate programs.

any employer in the US would know about both schools and it’s unlikely that one would be regarded much higher than the other, with the exception of specialties (berkeley econ might be better regarded than UCLA econ, whereas UCLA linguistics might be better regarded than berkeley’s)

this is a conjecture, but even in the UC’s official website, they barely give any credit to UCLA because they don’t have to. They’re essentially saying ‘this is ucla, you know it’s an amazing university, and that’s exactly why it draws some of the best applicants in the world’

i tell people this all the time but it seems that the berkeley kids cover their ears and yell because they can’t see this as true :p

Berkeley has HAAS, a top engineering department, and a top-tier computer department because of its proximity to silicon valley. However, UCLA has top-tier medicine departments, top-tier communications department, film school, etc.

it should also be noted that UCLA has stores open in both china and south korea, which probably helps which it’s regarded so high academically. UCLA also does WAY better than berkeley at fundraising (UCLA was #6 after Upenn, berkeley was like #17)

it just annoys me when i hear people think that berkeley is vastly superior to UCLA since that seems to be completely false. i saw a video of some girl on here cry when she got accepted to UCLA, but cried even more when she got into berkeley as well as get much respect and admiration from her family, as if she had got into the good one (UCLA), but now she got into the great one (UCB) this is simply not true anymore.

so it doesn’t matter what school you get your degree from for undergrad. At best you’ll get a bit more respect from the average person for UCLA, but that’s about it.

I found this on Wikipedia and also heard the same during a tour @ UCLA…

The UCLA trademark also sells as an overseas clothing and accessories brand. This trend arises from the school’s athletic and academic reputation, and popular images of the Southern California lifestyle. High demand for UCLA apparel has inspired the licensing of its trademark to UCLA brand stores throughout East Asia. Since 1980, 15 UCLA stores have opened in South Korea, and 43 are currently open in China.[73] There are also stores in Mexico, Singapore, and Europe.[74] UCLA makes $400,000 in royalties every year through its international licensing program.[74]

I think this conversation is almost useless and is splitting hairs, especially for undergrad. If you go to either school you are doing quite alright and should be proud.

That being said, I am applying to both and “should” get into both schools. I am going to base my decision on my own personal happiness, whether I want to move to LA or East Bay, cost of move/living, and which Anthropology Department I will be happiest in. Prestige isn’t really a factor for me due to the fact that both schools are basically tied for the best.

Ideally I would like to go to one for undergrad and the other for grad school, but who knows what will happen over the next few years.

In France, UCLA and Berkeley are extremely well-know, just like HYPS. Actually, I would argue that only HYPS are as famous (not more famous) as Berkeley and UCLA.

I think there was one song that was very popular called “UCLA” in France.

Schools like Upenn, Brown, or even MIT are simply not famous for the average person and even above-average person (by that, I mean a college student for example).

Of course, professors must know about schools like UPenn etc. but probably not your future employer

I couldn’t agree with beyphy and BerkeleyOrBust more. These schools are statistically and practically equivalent. Yes, UCB has some areas where it excels and, yes, UCLA has areas of it’s own where it too excels, but all-in-all these two schools are far, far more similar than they are different.

If you get in to either, or both, be proud; because you will be attending one of the best public universities in the world.
