Hi everyone. My question is quite simple: which institution is more well known nationally and globally Stanford or Cal? The only reason I'm asking this is because a certain poster (goes by the name ilovecalifornia) is insisting that Cal is more famous than Stanford and refuses to believe people can honestly believe otherwise. Here is a quote from something he wrote in the Stanford forum:
JUST BC STANFORD IS NOT AS WELL KNOWN AS UC BERKELEY doesn't mean you have to say i'm outrageous or offensive. its not a big deal. get over it.
From your own experience posters which university is more well known?

PS:I believe that Cal is a fine institution don't get me wrong.

^I politely disagree.
However I'm asking personal opinions here so there can be no right and no wrong unless someone wants to do a professional survey which (I at least) have no intention of doing. :)

It's hard to say which between the two is more popular because both of them are almost equally popular. But I notice that in the Far East, Berkeley has a very slight edge in popularity over Stanford primarily because Asians are facinated with science, technology and engineering, and Berkeley is a known powerhouse in those areas. But I seriously think that both are great schools along with Harvard, MIT, CalTech and Yale.

^Yes I've heard Berkeley is quite popular in the far east. I also agree that both are almost equally popular but the discussion is which one is slightly more popular?

So the implication is that Stanford is not good at science, technology, and engineering?

from my experiences on the east coast, Stanford takes the crown, especially for undergrad reputation.

Cal seems to have a bit more international reputation, but most of us posting are in the US so it wouldn't be fair for us to judge without somebody abroad saying much.

I said famous. Also, the "whose college is best" fights are getting very annoying. You will have a good life if you go to Cal. And yes, Berkeley is more well known, it has a history. Especially in France, we like Berkeley because their history, during the Vietnam War, was similar to what happened here.
Stanford, on the other hand, is seen as a place where rich kids go only because their parents could pay for it... not that it's a bad thing. It's just that UCB is more famous, and is liked better overseas. Period. End of the useless thread of the day.

Ilovecalifornia is a girl not a boy :) Just wanted to make that small correction. Also I think you are going to hear about half and half on this one. I personally have been told that Cal holds more weight internationally but I certainly wouldn't say that is absolute. Both are great schools. Who really cares which one is slightly more popular than the other one? My husband went to Cal and my friend went to Stanford. They both are incredibly intelligent, capable people who received excellent educations.

Depends largely on where you live. Californians probably know both and consider them equally prestigious, but in other parts of the world (I live in the northeast) UCB is not known at all, while some might even think that Stanford is an ivy.

UCB is great for grad school, but Stanford undergrad blows it away. Only in perhaps california do people even think they are remotely close and maybe among some hyper-academic types.
