heyy im planning on living in the honors dorms, so which one is the best, are they hard to get into?

Unless you’re enrolled in an honors program, it is hard to get a spot in the honors quad. The rooms are reserved to honors students, but if it does not fill up, spots will open to other students.

As for your options (Blanton, Andrews, Carothers), you cannot chose. You sign up to live in the “Honors Community” and the housing department will chose which actual dormitory you will live in.

oh okay i didnt know that thank you!!

Blanton is the worst. It doesn’t have sinks in the rooms.

They are essentially one complex. The building doesn’t matter.

Blanton doesn’t have sinks in the room. Andrews is the quietest. Carothers is where the main entrance to the quad from Whitis is, so I thought it was the most convenient.

But it will be the same wherever you live–you really can’t tell where one building stops and another starts–they are connected inside. To go from Blanton to Carothers you can either walk across the Quad or you can walk through Andrews.

Is there a kitchen in the honors quad that Blanton residents can use?

are the honors form still social like the others?

The honors dorms are very social but not in a loud all night long on school nights way.

Two reasons for the honors dorms being social: They have their own little quad, with picnic tables, sidewalks, the Littlefield Patio Cafe - an obvious place so relax, socialize. The rooms have no private bathrooms - you can’t hide in your room 24/7 - need to get out at least often enough to shower - seriously, generally speaking, in dorms without bathrooms, residents interact with each other often in the halls.

There are lots of lounges, lobbies, and study areas, too.

Does anyone know if there is a kitchen in the honors quad?

There is a kitchen in Carothers.

You can get the key at decent hours at the Quad desk in the Carothers lobby.

Does Littlefield also have a kitchen? Or could I use the one in Carothers?

Maerth, I’m not 100% sure of either of these but:
- I think that if you live in Littlefield, your ID won’t let you into Carothers; you’d have to go in with someone who lives in Andrews, Blanton, or Carothers; they are connected so if you can get into one of them, you can get into all of them.
- I think there is a kitchen with an oven in Littlefield and that residents bake brownies there.

Anyone know for sure?

Thanks for the info, Midwest Mom. :] That’s all I really want to use a kitchen for!

The kitchen in Carothers is the one people use. There is also one in the Q (the place with TV and pool in Andrews basement). It was open this year but apparently it was locked last year.

Carothers and Andrews tend to be preferred but I know plenty of people that enjoyed living in Blanton last year.

Also, I have returned from evening events at 3 or 4 in the morning swiped in at the front desk, walked out into the quad to see 10 people playing frisbee. People dont keep you up partying, but there is always something exciting going on. :)

Is the location of the honors quad any less convenient than, say, Jester or San Jac? I noticed it’s a little isolated.

NO IT ISN’T! UT is not all just a campus map.

The Honors Quad is the best located dorm on campus because it is a two second walk from the Drag and close to West Campus, where I hope for your sake you will spend a lot of your time.

Campus really ends at San Jacinto Blvd–you won’t be going past it often at all (really just for home football games).

Unless you are going to spend all of your life in the library and gym and Jester food court, the 21st St dorms are not very well located at all. The Whitis Ave dorms are in a much better location.

Campus really should be definited as between Lamar and San Jacinto. If you look at it that way the Honors Quad is in the very center of campus.

So I take it it’s not a bad walk from that area to the library? Anyway, thanks for clearing that up; living in the honors quad sounds neat.

It’s about a ten minute walk to the library–a little more during the early afternoon when the paths are crowded.

However, there really isn’t much need to go to the library. There are a lot of study places in or near the Quad–the Andrews, Blanton, or Carothers living rooms, the Q, Blanton attic, Joynes Room, outside in the Quad, and Littlefield Patio Cafe are all in the Quad. Kinsolving has some big group study rooms. The Comm library is right across the street.

The only times I ever went to PCL is if I needed to check out a book that was at PCL–maybe three times all year. I literally didn’t go to PCL once in the first semester.
