So basically, all of this hoopala about the Gourman Report is data, which is over 9 year old and individual mileage may vary.

Sybbie-
The data is probably 10 years old. But, the quality of a department generally takes decades to develop and decades to change significantly. It is certainly better than being completely in the dark. Gourman examines some important indicators, listed above. And, what's more, the Gourman overall rankings (based on their numerical system of weighted criteria) fundamentally agree with current rankings by US News in 2006.

There are a few majors with which I am familiar and the Gourman rankings agree pretty well with my knowledge of those programs. If there is a major with which you are quite familiar, tell me and I will list the Gourman rankings for you. Then you can see whether they agree with what you personally know.

that physics ranking depresses me, now I will be forced to take JHU over BC even though I like BC better

The report seems to favor bigger research oriented schools as opposed to LACs or LAC-like schools (although Princeton seems to be an exception).

if there are rankings on these majors i would really appreciate it.

sooo, if my counting is correct (may be one or two off), Cornell was #1 in 71 of the 112 subjects listed.

nice to see the "worst ivy" dominating over 63% of the list against the 7 other schools.

gomestar-
The ORDER in which the names appear after the subject doesn't mean anything. Cornell would always be listed first simply because that was the order I entered the data in my spreadsheet. If the name of the school is listed after the subject, it simply means it was one of the top four Ivies according to Gourman OR it had a score over 4.7.

The subjects under the TECHNICAL category are offered only at Cornell so Cornell was the only Ivy listed.

But, yes, if you exclude the technical subjects that are offered only at Cornell, I think Gourman rated Cornell among the top four Ivies in more subjects than any other Ivy, by a small margin.

ahhh, i didnt see any specified way of ordering otherwise (and nothing else was mentioned).

buuuuut at least there's still "Gourman rated Cornell among the top four Ivies in more subjects than any other Ivy"

The finance list is pretty close to what US news has today. In this thread they posted the top 24 finance schools http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=163323&page=2

these are extremely similar. I am thinking about PSU and Wisconsin but UMD seems like the place for me.

I would like to see the marketing list if they have it or the Accounting. Thanks a lot.

ha, talk about just making 4.3s Makes me want to go to Uwisc even more but i think it'll be UMD. UMD is 18th in the US news report in marketing so i guess that is a little better.

Excluding the "TECHNICAL" fields which are offered only at Cornell, here is the number of majors in which each Ivy was among the top few Ivies according to the Gourman Report:

Brown 17
Columbia 44
Cornell 58
Harvard 47
Penn 51
Princeton 34
Yale 35

I did not include Dartmouth because of the Gourman bias toward larger schools. Too bad Gourman didn't do a separate assessment for small schools. (Although Caltech gets quite a few top rankings...confusing)

I tallied the number of majors for which the Gourman Report ranked a school as one of the top TWO Ivies in that major. The results surprised me.

Number of majors in which school was ranked top two among the Ivies

"TECHNICAL" majors which are offered only at Cornell were excluded. If schools differed by only a miniscule amount, I counted them both.

Harvard 36
Cornell 35
Penn 30
Princeton 26
Yale 21
Columbia 18
Brown 7

I left Dartmouth off because it is more like an LAC.

I have been saying that Gourman favors larger universities, and I still think it does have that bias. But, I noticed that Princeton was ranked among the top two even though it is one-third the size of Cornell. (Caltech also makes it into the top of the Gourman lists quite often, and Caltech is tiny.) The Gourman criteria related to scale and size can be outweighed by other criteria.

hey could someone post the complete Gourman lists for South Asian Studies and Political Science? ITs been tough finding schools that offer both, and the ones I found were pretty competitive (e.g. Harvard, Penn) and I want to find some safeties....thanks!
