i have put up a same post in another forum but i decide to post it again here..

hi everyone! guess you probably think i cares too much about $! LOL~~actually i'm just asking for one of my friends. she is really really good at maths( like 800 for maths on both SAT1 and SAT2) and she intends to become an actuary because that will bring her billions of $. however, she told me that she decides to give up this pursuit because becoming an actuary in the US requires 8-year college life and she simply cannot take it! she is now really confused at which courses to take and what job to find. do you guys have any suggestions for her? do u think engineering a good choice for her?
BTW, she is from the same country as me, China and she is beginning her undergraduate education in a small LAC.

I have a get-rich-quick scheme. Ask your friend to send me a cheque for $5000 and I'll tell her everything she needs to make that 360k/yr salary of hers. She'll regain everything in 5 days! What a deal!

actuaries do "well", about the same as engineers, and it is also a 4-yr program. you can graduate and get right into it and take tests on the side while you build your career.

just like the best engineers (that want to) rise and become great and well paid managers, the upper level actuaries do quite well.

if your friend is looking to make $$$ at all costs, here are the options:

Quant Finance/Trading: Unlimited upward potential especially for those with Derivatives knowledge. Good path might be BS Mathematics/Econ -> MFE -> Wall St. Post MFE ~ 120k. The best people on Wall St. make big $.

Top Law School: With strong math skills, ur friend will probably do excellent on the LSAT. Combine that with a nice GPA, go to Harvard Stanford or Yale, and then join a NYC "big law" firm (starts at 160k or so)

Medical could also be an option but they need to like biology and physics in addition to math.

being an engineer. An engineer in big city make a big bucks (starting salary is about 65k in silicon valley), and save the money and open a business with ur best friends.
