I'll be a freshman in college next year, most likely majoring in biology with a pre-vet curriculum, and probably minoring in astronomy. I plan on going to Eastern Michigan and using the laptop for 4+ years while in school.

I have a job, but it's minimum wage and I only work 20 hours a week, if that. But I do have 7-8 months before moving in, so I'd be saving up for the majority of that type.

Any help/advice would be great, thanks!

Even though you have a job, think of a laptop as a investment because it depends on your preferences on what you want for a laptop. Computers are pretty fast nowadays regardless of price and size. Let me ask you some questions?

Do you want a light and thin laptop? (less than 5 lbs)
Do you want a laptop with a big screen?
Do you want a laptop that has long battery life? (> 5 hours)
Do you play lots of games?
Do you like Windows or OS X?

Biology majors don’t need to run special software, so you don’t need to spend lots of cash for a powerful laptop. But don’t spend too little because you’re afraid of theft (less than < 600) unless you know you’re getting a good deal. At least for me, in college theft is uncommon and I usually don’t bring my laptop with me.
