Which Laptop?

T61 of course!

i love my dell xps m140. im not sure they make it anymore.

but if you dont get a dell, you cant go wrong with a mac (they're really beautiful machines)

Any computer is fine as long as it's not a Mac. And you have Linux installed.

Asus is cheap laptops for average quality.

actually, that's Acer. and their more expensive laptops are actually very high quality. partially because you wouldn't call it a Ferrari and make it feel cheap, but there're a few non-Ferraris that're good too.

Asus is aimed more towards gaming/performance. think Alienware or Falcon Northwest, just not as hardcore.

for Sony, you're paying for the name/fashion statement. for Apple, it's that plus the OS and higher-quality build for the MBP. for IBM, you get the most durable and reliable notebooks on the market. for the most part, you get what you pay for, and Apple, IBM, Fujitsu, and Asus might have expensive offerings, but they're the best out there.

I'm not too big on fashion for my laptop, so that puts Sony in the "pay for the name" category. I didn't really enjoy OSX, so I paid for the name/look of the MacBook because a similarly equipped PC would have cost 400$ less.

I can't speak too much about IBM, Fujitsu, and Asus since I have yet to get or see one in action throughout the years. But I'm sure I can agree with you on those brands. Too bad my wallet can't afford them :(.

ASUS does have pretty decent brands (I have a R1F tablet), with one of the best warrantys in the industry (2 years).

Otherwise, a IBM Thinkpad will last you many years.

LIES!

Macs are great, ask UCLA students with them, i bet the majority of them were more than satisfied.

I would say get a Macbook or Macbook Pro, but i don't even know if that's an option. If it is, that's my advice!

Please do not compare Macs with Linux...........

in no way did i try to compare them. i simply was stating that there's nothing wrong with macs.

and with my experiences and from what i've been told, Linux isn't for everyone.
we don't know how much computer related knowledge the OP has, so i was just giving a suggestion with what i know so far.

:)

lol i am biased

Two good places to get great laptops and customer service is:
Powernotebooks.com
xoticpc.com

I had experience with both companies and they were just great. If you're worried at all about the quality of customer service, then I would absolutely recommend both of them.

Also, something to consider:

Hope you all get your laptops!
