Which Liberal Arts school has a better Studio Art program?

My son is looking for a good liberal arts school with a good studio arts program in NY/Upstage NY. We're considering SUNY Purchase, SUNY New Paultz, Hobart, Syracuse, Ithaca. I know that's quite a few, but any thoughts would be so greatly appreciated. Thank you! We're also looking at Bennington in VT.

Skidmore?

Threre is an arts major subforum to explore…

What medium is important. My daughter needed a school with a great ceramics program as well as other things. She applied and was admitted to Beloit in Wisconsin but when we got to admitted student day they told us they just dropped their ceramics program for printmaking. That was the fasted admitted student day we ever went to! Alfred (private, not state) is tops in ceramics but not other medium. Do go to the arts major forum but more info will be needed.

We looked at Bard for a science major; D hated it for the same reasons I loved it: its quirky, hipster, artsy flavor. But they have studio arts programs and have had over the years some very gifted artists teaching there. Be sure to check out the facilities in which you’ll be working; some programs seem to take pride in their under-funded shabbiness; make sure there’s sufficient exhibition and studio space for the students, and keep in mind that much recent artwork has required large amounts of space. If you ask students about space problems, make sure to ask more than one because what is sufficient for a ceramic artist might not be sufficient for someone working in multidimensional arenas. If you’re interested in computer-generated artwork, shabby just won’t do as well as cutting-edge.

Some small LACs with strong art studio (and art history) departments:
Williams, Wesleyan, Hamilton, Vassar, Oberlin, Kenyon, Haverford, Conn College, Skidmore. Selectivity varies from very to mid-level.

@momrath Nice list, but surely Haverford is near Vassar level selectivity?

You are right: Haverford is about the same as Vassar in selectivity. I just meant to give a general progression and wasn’t paying attention to exact percentages.

Alfred for ceramics as well as fine arts. Although a private school, the arts dept is like a SUNY.
