What do YOU mean when you say communications? What do you hope to do with your major? What types of jobs? do you forsee yourself doing?

So TV Reporter vs. Speech writer vs. Speech THerapist ??

Once you know that, then look at the Undergrad section of Communications Department in each college of interest, and see what courses they have, what internships, what the professors are interested in. Often they have links to what types of jobs relate to the major.

communications, general: good for broad overview
communication disorders: speech therapy
communication systems: sounds like IT to me
communication/Rhetoric: public speaking and persuasion
communication technologies: using machines like video cameras
human sciences communication: speech therapy
agricultural communication: talking to farmers
international and intercultural communications: talking to people from other places
graphic communications: lots of images, maybe web page development, photo
technical and scientific communications: writing technical manuals

In general, Communication can be split up into
Media careers - TV, radio? Either talent or technical
Organizational Careers - Advertising and Public Relations
Related careers that use communication - politics, human services
Journalism - writing for various kinds of media, including social media
Speech pathology - helping people with language issues

Most likely the major you apply for will make very little, if any, difference in the end. Honestly, I’d pick something general and see what sounds good once you start. Things like communication disorders will be very science-y compared to something like graphic communications, which will be more PR/Marketing-ish most likely.
