I am currently thinking of changing my major. I’m currently choosing between biology and geology, and it’s VERY close at this point, as I love both fields. One factor I should take into consideration is how likely I am to get a job with either degree. Which of these majors is most likely to get me a job in its field?
I was a bio science major at a major university and felt I needed to go to grad school to be employable. But, this may be because I didn’t feel I received the lab skills in my education to start working and I did not receive much advising on building my internship resume while in school even though I was at a major research university. My son is a geology major at a major university and the school of earth science touts a very high employment rate out of a 4-year degree. I also think his classes are giving him lots of practical learning in computer skills and field work. But, these two majors are for very different fields, so I would recommend that you job shadow a few related industries for each major, even for a day and see what interests you more. it doesn’t matter if you are employed if you hate what you are doing every day. Geology generally has an optimistic job outlook, both public and private sector and not as many people enter the field so high demand.
I have a daughter who is considering majoring in biology. I have assumed that if she does then graduate school is almost a certainty. Fortunately she picked a very good school for undergrad which is very reasonably priced so she will be able to afford graduate school.
