Which major in UCSD is better, Management Science or Economics?

I applied UCSD as a mangement science major, but one of my friends said economics department n UCSD is very strong. So now I'm start to wonder should I switch to Economics? Thank you

They’re both part of the econ department. Management Science just has econometrics which requires more math. UCSD is also ranked 6th in econometrics (according to the rankings they provide).

The Management Science major is still under the economics department at UCSD.

[UC San Diego Department of Economics :: Major and Minor Requirements](http://economics.ucsd.edu/ugrad/ugradMajorMinorReqs/index.php)

You still have the option to take economics classes throughout your time at UCSD, I believe it is a matter of choice. The Economics B.A. seems to be a middle ground between the Joint Economics-Math B.A. and the Management Science B.S. You also get a little more choice and flexibility in your upper division classes as an Economics major. Either way, your still under UCSD economics department which is ranked 14th in graduate economics(US News and World Report), so your probably in a top 25 undergraduate economics program.

Hope that helps.

So why management science require more math? Does anyone know which major is more popular or easier to find a job later? Cuz i’m more interested in Economics, but I guess mangement science may have more oppurtunities in later job seeking. So now i’m very conflicted.

You can never go wrong with Econ! I look at all my previous CFO’s, VP’s, execs, etc… most have econ degrees

management science is related to operations research which is a branch of applied math. Managment Sci would be equivalent to ORMS at berkeley. It will give you a more quantitative background and you’d be able to apply to OR jobs in addition to the econ jobs.

Worse comes to worse, you could always take a combination of regular economics upper divisions and management science class for the first quarter, then you can choose which you prefer. Isn’t there only one more math class you have to take, 20F?

Also the UCSD site states, “Helps to prepare students for MBA’s”, so I would only assume it is much more business oriented.

I actually haven’t heard much of Management Science B.S. beyond seeing it at UCSD, but you can never go wrong with an Economics B.A. especially at a top school like UCSD.

If you see yourself becoming involved in business, it appears Management Science is much more suitable for that goal.

economic and management science both belong to econ department
