which major is more difficult? applied math or statistics ?

Which major is more difficult at Berkeley? applied math??? statistics???

Most people told me applied math is more difficult than statistics. Please give me some advices.

If so, I will chang my applied math to statistics after I transfer.

Let’s just say if you do applied math, most likely statistics will be pretty easy for you. However, if you only do statistics, applied math (major) will seem impossible/very hard.

just from my contact with people in both departments, it appears the general consensus is that stats majors have a severe inferiority complex to math majors and math majors are convinced that theirs is the more ‘serious’ major

just my observation. i honestly think it depends what kind of mind you have. but for a sample of people, i’d expect the majority would find the math major more challenging.

If I want to change my major after transfer, how should I do? who knows?

Applied Math is most likely harder than Statistics simply because with Applied Math, you can choose to concentrate on one of many different “fields” in which the math is applied, which includes Statistics. There are also harder and more classes to take to graduate as an Applied Math Major, but personally I feel that those classes would prepare you better for your future. But hey, even if you’re an Applied Math Major, there are still certain “concentrations” that require you to take upper division stats classes (which is what I will be doing).

As for your major, don’t worry. When you’re admitted, they only put your major as the one you chose. That is only to give them an idea of what you’re potentially going to major in. When you actually start life as an undergraduate at Cal, your major starts out as Undecided. You basically have until junior year until they actually push you to declare, so there’s much time to consider how much you like each major before you actually commit.
