So I have to decide which major I want to do in the next couple weeks. I'm still unsure about some things though.

Accounting:
Are there jobs in accounting with a bachelors degree? Is it different than those accounting jobs that don't require a degree?
Also, I hear that you can work for the big 4 with a bachelors degree, but isn't that all public accounting which requires a CPA?

MIS: I enjoy working with computers and learning about them, but I hear that an actual computer science degree is always better for finding jobs than a MIS degree.

I work full time and am not sure how I could ever do an internship (I take classes in the summer too, any suggestions? Is it worth getting a degree without an internship?)

There are plenty of jobs in the business world for people with MIS degrees. It is true that for the most technical positions (like a systems designer/architect) a computer science degree is better, and it is also better if you are working in computing in a scientific context. But MIS will work just fine for business application programming, analysis, testing, project management, networking & systems administration, help desk support, and similar types of roles.

On the accounting front I would assume that a Big 4 would help you get the CPA if you have the appropriate degree, but that is really outside my expertise and experience. Maybe someone else can comment on that.

Accountants find jobs without much problem at all. The pay is pretty standard right out of school and so is the process of getting the CPA. I don’t think an internship is important at all in this field as the demand is high.

Thank you very much, I have an additional question

Since accounting and MIS are both business degrees and share all the same classes besides the handful of major specific ones. (like 6-8 classes), could I get a bachelors in say MIS then immediately go back to get a bachelors in accounting by only taking the 8ish different classes to get another bachelors to open more opportunities? Or is that not advisable?

An internship is CRITICAL to getting a signed offer. Are you seriously going to suggest that he wait until he is out of school to start looking for a job just because he is in a “demand” field?

Redpop200 - You really need to speak with your university about the dual degree options. Many places offer that, but how they approach it can vary slightly. Most likely it is feasible, but you need to speak with your advisor to work out the specifics.

At my school, accounting and MIS are only 5 classes different. If you want to get a dual degree, you have to graduate at the same time with both degrees. As in, if you graduate with one, you then have to go back and take ALL of the same classes again to get the other.

I would say that with MIS, the school you go to also has a significant factor. Some corporations recruit heavily from schools that they know prepare their students properly. Accounting is offered pretty much everywhere, and yes, since you would likely have to get a CPA, the school you go to isn’t as vital.

Either way, an internship is the most important thing.
