Which major should I choose?

Hi guys, I am a HEOP student at NYU College and Arts and Sciences, as of right now I am a B.S. in mathematics/B.S. in electrical engineering (the dual degree with NYU POLY). As of late I have been considering changing my major to Computer Science. I just wanted to know the pros and cons of both, job availability, salary and curriculum. Thanks for your time and I hope you can answer my questions.

As a general statement: the job market is tight everywhere.

However, computer science and mathematics are both majors that are in high demand. My work sometimes intersects with math, so I can speak more about that - I know that there are dozens of fields math majors are routinely hired in. Business/finance/economics, risk management/insurance underwriting, research in universities (health, psychological research), pharmaceutical companies - these are all industries that hire applied mathematicians to crunch their numbers.

Usually, though, having a good grasp of computer science (primarily programming) is a good idea and a demanded skill even for the math major who wants one of those jobs.

My question is - why are you considering changing? Did you take a computer science class and love it? Are you worried about job prospects? I think if it’s the former, than by all means change it - just stay strong in math. You want to major in something you’re passionate about. If it’s the latter, there are many prospects in math (and electrical engineering) so you can stay put if you like your major.

Pick whichever one is more compelling to you. Both of them are among the best in terms of job prospects.

Thank you guys it really means a lot!!
