Hey everyone I want to become a lawyer and I have a lot of interests and I would like to learn so much . I start school in August and I’m majoring in economics right now but I want to add something to it . Right now I’m thinking of adding Business information systems but I’m also seeing accounting is a good idea or finance . Is me double majoring in economics and Business information systems with pre law concentration good . Should I add an accounting minor to that . I also plan to to get my JD and MBA. Any ideas or hints would be helpful .
Why do you want to add something? Why can’t majoring economics be enough?
Because I don’t just wanna study one thing , I am interested in multiple things from programming to economics and law and business .
Why another major though? Why not a minor, or just taking classes outside of econ that interest you?
See how hard it is before committing to an additional thing.
If you’re interested in multiple things, it might be a better idea to just take courses of interest or courses that you think would be beneficial to you in the future. If you find something that you really love that you want to pursue more in depth, then you can consider adding a double major, or if you end up taking so many classes in an area (even if you’re just picking based on interest) that turning it into a minor or major is no problem, then sure, add a double major.
Add a double major because it’s an area that you really want to pursue in depth or because you need the degree for the future career you want. A double major (or minor) will not matter for law school or business school admissions, especially if it means you give up time getting work experience, internships, studying for required standardized tests, or getting the best GPA possible.
Alright @DjClass657303 I read that you wanted to be a lawyer, and one thing came to mind after that: Focus.
My first note: Law School doesn’t require any specific major to be admitted, however do they do require you to take the LSAT (Law School Admissions Test).
Second Note: If you decide to attend any Law School, please do not major in Poli-Science / Pre-Law, major in something else (as a backup plan) and then you can always do that if law school fails in the end. (Maybe like History or Math or something along those lines where you can get a job in education).
POST STARTS HERE ABOUT BECOMING A LAWYER:
I want to be an attorney at law as well, however there are some things you might need to know about that prior to signing your life away at a law school.
1.) Read Paul Campos Book “Don’t Go To Law School! (Unless)”
- He addressed everything wrong about becoming a lawyer and what you need to do in order to do it successfully.
2.) Only about 2 in 5 people are better off AFTER going to law school than before. The average law school students loan is $150k. The average attorneys salary is around 55k. So make sure you know what you’re getting yourself into.
3.) Understand your competition; people like me. I took 60 credit hours in 1 year (A.A. degree) and graduated Summa Cum Laude from my state college with a 3.85 GPA and belonged to Phi Theta Kappa, an Honor Society. If this doesn’t sound like you, that’s normal; just remember normal people that go to law school get eaten alive… Even I am nervous about it because there are more prestigious people awaiting me.
Moral of this post: I am not saying you cannot become a lawyer.
I AM SAYING: You cannot become a successful* lawyer unless you bust your ass and make a name for yourself.
It’s really hard work, but if you put in the time and effort you can definitely make it.
*success is defined as debt free, being able to own a house, buy a nice car or even a new car, etc.
Remember, I am not telling you that you can’t do anything, I am just letting you know that its extremely, extremely competitive and that with an ‘unsure’ or ‘undecided’ attitude that is not focused on law, you will lose every time to someone else that is.
- That is my input on the Law side of things...
