Which Major?

So I am a sophomore in High school and i guess it is time to plan my future. I have always wanted to teach music but also conduct ensembles as well, whether it be a middle school band to a elite community band. I also have a want to learn all the instruments of band. I don't want to work with music lower than middle school though. What should my major be? Music Education or Conducting?

Start witb a Music Ed degree. It can be hard to find a Conducting degree at the undergraduate level. In Music Ed you’ll have the opportunity to learn different instruments. Depending on the program, you may be able to specialize in primary or secondary grade levels. But in our school district, many middle school music teachers also teach at the elementary or high school level.

If you get a bachelor’s in Music Ed, teach for a few years and then go on for your master’s, you’ll be in a good position to direct the more elite groups that you mentioned.

Music Education, if you want to work in schools (elementary to high school)- it’s a “must”. In most state.s, you’re going to have to get a Masters either before or while you are working in a school anyway

If you are a sophomore, it doesn’t have to be “time to plan *(your) future.” A lot can happen in the next 2 1./2 years. if you do what you enjoy, and work hard, you will have lots of options. And if you love music, by all means learn different instruments and keep practicing and playing. You may end up auditioning on one, so keep that in mind, though a BA in music (as opposed to BM) may not require one.

If music ends up being your field, you may get a BA, BM, major in music ed, do a double major or double degree or minor in music. Here is a good essay on the study of music: http://www.peabody.jhu.edu/conservatory/admissions/tips/doubledegree.html

Enjoy high school, keep your options open as long as you can, and don’t stress too much about the future. There are lots of ways to get to where you end up wanting to go in terms of school and jobs, and you don’t have to decide just yet!

Is anyone else having problems posting from mobile devices? I’ve found that I can’t edit from my phone or iPad either, hence the messy post in this thread.
