Which Major??

Hi, im a senior in a NJ HS and I have gotten into all my colleges, Rutg'ers, Northeastern, Syracuse, Cornell, Oberlin in Ohio, Boston College and BU. My top 3 right now, based on money issues and levels of comfort, are Syracuse, Northeastern, and Rutgers. My problem is, Im not so sure bout my major anymore!!! Any guidance in what to major in that would lead to a good career would be helpful, or if you think i should stay in my present major choice, what careers? heres some info...

I was interested in psychology/psychiatry because I have a high aptitute for social sociences, literature, and its something i have interest in and that can be applied to many fields. I also thought I would enjoy/make good money in a career as a psychologist/psychiatrist. However, by reading many of these posts and from some research, it seems I was mistaken and that the jobs available are NOT high paying enough or are in enough demand to be worth the educational value, especially since it is not exactly a deep passion of mine, just an interest. And, unfortunately, a job with good money, hopefully eventually hundred thou +, and security is important to me due to the fact that my one passion in life is horseback riding and competing, an extremely expensive sport that i want to support in the future.

To help you out, I also used to be great at and love science, especially biology, but have always gotten good grades but had trouble with math. However, some bad science teachers in high school kinda killed science for me, but im sure that some good teachers could rekindle the interest and aptitude. I have been looking at careers in med, but dont know if i could quite handle the 8 years of school plus residency. I want a little bit of freedom in my job, so I might consider dermatology, dentistry/orthodontics or any other highly specialized form of medicine. I have always been interested in a career in law but dont know much about the different types of lawyers or how much work/money is involved.

In short, ANY ADVICE WOULD BE HIGHLY APPRECIATED.

Thank you so much.

What's the hurry to pick out a major? I was a die-hard biology fan in high school with ecology research under my belt, but the omni-presence of genetics and molecular bio (yawn) in my classes effectively squashed that desire. Right now I'm thinking of completely switching tracks to history or anthropology. It's normal to be undecided about your major, so do NOT feel pressured to have your life planned out.

That said, who said psychology was a bad career? The field is predicted to grow faster than average, and fields like educational psych, mental health, counseling, and marketing will be growing especially fast. The average salary is about $45-75,000 a year, and it's possible to make $90,000 or more working in industry.

Yeah, psychology is a good field. The range in salaries comes from the fact that there are so many levels. You can counsel with only a masters, but a PhD or a PsyD would get you tons more. And the average salary for a psychiatrist is 130, 000. And it also comes down to your schooling. Think about all the online colleges that offer psych degrees. I'm pretty sure those people wouldn't have the same kind of salary as someone graduating from any of the schools you've mentioned. But, also, if you're not sure about the psych, spend your freshman and maybe even sophmore years getting in core and elective classes, then make a decision when you know more.

I think it's better to not declare a major for awhile. I am a sophmore and want to change majors, but I will pretty much have to restart college. I have mostly taken classes for my major of history in order to be a teacher and decided I really don't want to teach. Now I need to figure out what I want to do, but since most of my classes are for history I will have to start all over.
