I am a freshman at college, and I'm not sure what to major in. My top choices are history, film and digital media, and environmental studies.

Of these three choices, the third one (environmental studies) seems to be the most solid one in terms of job security; however, while I don't 'hate' the environment, I'm not a mega-supporter of it either.

I actually enjoy history; however, I realize that the career options for the major are limited (for careers actually related to history). So if I major in history, I would also try to get into internships related to journalism or media.

This is why I would want to major in film and digital media: I enjoy critiquing movies, and would want to be a writer/director on a tv show, movie, etc. However, in this instance, I realize that such jobs are very hard to get.

If I had the choice, I would major in journalism; unfortunately, my school has no such major.

Major in what you want to. Majors teach you more than you think. For example, history majors come out to be decent-to-great writers and analytical in thinking. Employers realize this and hire accordingly. Undergrad major has no implications on future career.

You don’t sound too excited about the environmental studies so why don’t you just major in history, minor in film or vice versa. Getting a job in the field is often mainly about making connections so try to get an internshp in your area of interest.

Is the film program at your college one that you could likely be admitted to? Oftentimes, admission to the film program is very competitive. Also, with that being the case, film majors are usually very passionate and driven about filmmaking. If it’s not that big a passion for you, you might not want to put the amount of time and effort into it that others in the program are.

Since you are a freshman, I’d recommend sticking with general studies while you figure this out. Take classes in the areas you are interested in to see if they are really what you thought they’d be.

If you love to write, I think you’ll find a major like history will help you to develop your writing skills which could help you segue into journalism eventually.
