Which majors are easier to get accepted?

Ok, my DD is a junior this year and not in the top 10% but is in the top 25%.. I am not going to go into her stats because she is just now taking the SAT/ACT but I do expect her to do okay..her weighted GPA is 4.6 and unweighted is a 3.8 as of right now..My question is what should she put as her intended major to have a better chance of getting accepted? We are of the mindset of "just get in and then transfer into the major you really want"....her dad is an alum and our family bleeds orange although I realize we may have to change our bloodtype, as getting in is a longshot..any advice for a junior???

Probably social work or education, I've known people not even in the top quarter who have gotten in this year for those without legacy or anything particularly special. They like future public servants. :)

Another one I've heard about is Geoscience. But all this may change for next year :)

SWTCAT, you and I will be sweating on these forums next year - I have a junior son who, right now, is in the top 10%, but is worried he might get a B in either AP English or pre AP physics this semester. Stress level is immense at our house!!

Natural Sciences shouldn't be too hard to get into either. Most of the engineering applicants who aren't qualified for engineering but are qualified for the school usually get into the college of natural sciences.

I do not think it is easy to get in if you specify biology major, college of natural sciences, or chemistry major, college of natural sciences.

Natural Science was a little tougher this year than in the past. Typically, Social Work has the lowest accepted GPA.

In general, Business, Engineering, Communications, and Nursing are the most competitive schools. However, specific majors within schools can be restricted too. For example, the College of Education is not generally competitive, but Kinesiology & Health is restricted. You'll just need to check the individual majors she's interested in. Also, something ese to consider is that the majors hard to enter as a freshman are also hard to transfer into later. So, your DD may want to apply to her dream major as 1st choice and a related major or Underclassmen Studies as 2nd choice.
This summer, encourage her to spend some quality time on her essays and submit a complete application as early as possible.

Thanks so much for the input! It is truly appreciated..DD wants to major in journalism which of course is in communications..I had heard that education is a possibility..would love to know if there are any success stories out there..I know most on these boards are either business or engineering..anyone know anything about journalism?

I know of one girl at our highschool who was not top 10% and got in communications this year. She had good test scores and a ton of EC's.

Quite a few girls from our highschool choose communications for some reason. I probably know about 10 who are there now in that school.

I am 3.6 unweighted, only in 40%, 1340 (2000) SAT, 29 ACT got accepted to School of Social Work under reg admission.... I believe it has the lowest GPA/SAT...

That's great Cynic! Are you planning to stay in that major? I am just wondering how easy it is to transfer majors? Normally the first year or two, depending on how many AP's or dual hours you have, are basics anyway..Are you in state? Do you go to a competitive HS?

Well it was my second choice, and I don't know about the whole transfer situation, just knew it was better to get my foot in the door FIRST..then worry about specialization/major (It's something like 8 in 10 people switch their major anyways) It seems like that's what you and your daughter are worrying about, too. From what I've heard, it's not very difficult. And yes, in state. And YES, extremely competitive. Our top 10%-ers have 1400+ SAT scores..Though her rank is higher than mine, y'all sound quite similar to my situation. If I decide to go, I will be 4th generation on both sides of the family to go to UT. =] I wish her tons of luck.

Thanks Cynic..your test scores are pretty good..DD will be taking the ACT in April so we will have a better idea then...she has been told to apply as early as possilbe..Sept 1st..One person even told her to drive her app. down if necessary...we may be on I-35 that day...LOL

i applied at around...8 PM on 11/30/08..and got my transcript to them on 12/1/08. Lol for those who wait til the last minute. DON'T though, it's unnecessary stress.

I might add, I took a class (Princeton Review) which really brought my SAT score up. Though extremely expensive, I think I can thank PR for acceptance, at least to UT. ACT I didn't study for at all and got a 29..From what I heard though, if you study, you can add at least one point onto your ACT score..
