Which Math Class (Math 1B or Math 16B)

So I'm an incoming freshman planning on doubling in Pre-business/Stat. I just found out that Haas now requires me to take either Math 1B or Math 16B even though I got a 5 on the Calc BC test. I had planned on taking Math 53, but now I guess it would be better for me to get 1B/16B out of the way.

So now I'm wondering which to take, and with which instructor?

My options are:

Math 1B with Jones

Math 1B with Olsson

Math 16B with Scanlon

Does anyone have any experience with any of these teachers and could comment on the difficulty of their class? Any comments on the two classes in general would be helpful too. I heard Math 1B is really hard and I want to keep a high GPA for Haas. Is Math 1B more fulfilling though, as in I'll learn more/be better prepared for higher math?

My CalSO is June 4-5 (AKA in 2 days) so I really want to figure out which class I want to take by then.

Thanks so much in advance!

If you want to keep a high GPA, I would recommend taking 16B. My friends who’ve gotten into Haas have not had any problems with their other classes because they didn’t take 1B, so you should be good. You may find it really easy and might get bored, but it’ll be worth it to get the A in the end.

You should ask yourself: is there any reason why you care about being better-prepared for higher math? Should you care?

After all, as a business major, you will only need a cursory glance of Calculus. I think it’s a stupid requirement, so why not take a class to boost your GPA for the over-competitive environment?

go with scanlon, the subject is easier and more A’s are given out than in 1B.

Will 1B prepare me better for higher level math though? Since I’m going to major in stats as well I’ll have to take Math 53 and 54, will I be at a disadvantage with only 16B as opposed to 1B?

imo no, i took 53 and we didn’t need many concepts from 1B to do well in there. but if you do choose to take 1B, go with Jones.

hey so i just happened to stumble on this thread as i was looking up stuff about math16b and math 1b and i was just wondering, which class did you go with in the end alluric? because i’m going through the same dilemma: i’m not sure if i should take 16b or 1b, since I also want to keep my gpa up for haas

[“Math 53 or Math 54 will also fulfill the calculus prerequisite for Haas.”](<a href=“Application Process - Undergraduate Program - Berkeley Haas”>Application Process - Undergraduate Program - Berkeley Haas)

So if you actually want to learn something new in math, you can take Math 53 or Math 54, as [suggested by the Math department](http://math.berkeley.edu/courses_AP.html).

So will Haas look down on you if you were to take less rigorous math classes like 16a and 16b then? Or would taking high classes like 1a and 1b be better?

good question MisterB7K. i was wondering the same thing. the haas website says that “course load” is something they look at so would taking 1a and 1b look better than 16a and 16b?

they “understand” the differences between the 16 series and the 1 series. basically take whichever one will satisfy the prereqs for your back up.

i’m sure an A in 16a vs an A in 1a will be seen the same way in general. by “course load” i think they mean getting good grades even in the face of a high unit count or if you foolishly took all your prereqs at once or took say stats 21 with 3 technical courses in one semester, then they’d factor that into their evaluation slightly.

Haas’ wording of its math requirement apparently discourages students from taking more rigorous math courses, as evidenced by the common (but not quite correct) belief that one has to take 1A or 16A even after a 5 on the AB, or that one has to take 1B or 16B even after a 5 on the BC (it is not quite correct because [“Math 53 or Math 54 will also fulfill the calculus prerequisite for Haas”](<a href=“Application Process - Undergraduate Program - Berkeley Haas”>Application Process - Undergraduate Program - Berkeley Haas), so completing either of those after a 5 on the BC or after 5 on the AB and Math 1B should be ok). Haas also says that [“Taking 1A and 1B over 16A and 16B will not increase your chances for admission.”](<a href=“FAQ - Undergraduate Program - Berkeley Haas”>FAQ - Undergraduate Program - Berkeley Haas)

There does not appear to be any UGBA course that requires any more math than Math 16A.
