Hi, I’m going to be a freshman at Brown this year. I’m trying to decide which math class I should take first semester. It’s between Math 18 (Intermediate Calculus) and Math 35 (Honors Calculus). I took BC Calculus in high school and got a 5 on the AP exam. I love math but if I wind up majoring in it I would be doubling, as chemistry is my primary interest.

Here’s the problem: According to the course guide, anyone who received a 5 on the BC exam is greatly encouraged to take Math 35 if they are seriously interested in mathematics. However, I don’t want to have serious trouble in this class and fall behind my first semester. In high school, my class only spent about 2 weeks on Talyor Series and the surrounding unit, so I’m not too great at them. Is anyone making the same decision I am, and if so, what have you decided upon? Also, if anyone who currently goes to Brown could give me any information on the two classes, and which you suggest, it would be greatly appreciated. In fact, any advice would be wonderful.
Thanks,
Charlie
