which math course (for senior year) looks better for college?

So this week we are doing course selections for school and I'm debating between two math courses:

Calculus CP1 (normal) or AP Statistics
which one would look better on a college application? Some people have told me that colleges like when you take calculus, others have said the AP would be better
I'm confused...

This year I took Pre-Calculus CP1 (the requirement for Juniors at my school)

and next year I'm taking AP Literature, AP World History, Spanish 5 CP1, and either Forensics or AP Biology (undecided but probably won't take Bio... I dunno yet though) and then a bunch of electives

And I've heard that AP Stat is good to take if you want to major in English, History, Psych, ect.. (which I do)

suggestions?

thanks!!

I've heard even regular calc looks better than AP Stats (i still took stats, more useful IMO)

wow thats pretty messed up making calc non ap... geez.. i'd say go with stats then, but only if u're a non-engineering major~
calculus is prety much a must if u're going into science/math field.

they do have AP Calc AB and BC but there is noooooo way I'd take it! lol (i'm ok at math, much much better at English and History though)

take AP Stat it sounds like it would be better for your intended college major, if you pass the AP test and get college credit and major in a humanity, you won't have to take much more math in college.

take ap calc ab...it's not that bad...really.

I second that. Calculus is not that bad; it just gets hyped up too much.

Look, take calculus and go into it with the attitude that "I'm going to figure out why these ideas are natural and not too bad." If you go in with the attitude that you're not going to be creamed, and that it's not hard, it really won't be if you're proactive and try to figure out when you're not getting something.

Calculus will be better in teaching you analytical skills. I know you're not a math/science person necessarily, but it is good for you. Stats is considerably easier, but may be more nitpicky, annoying busywork.

^Calculus as a concept really isn't that hard. I have found it's just advanced algebra!!

the only "hard" parts to calc are the conceptual things like 3D rotations using shells or washers, or being able to visualize a function, its integral, and its derivative simulaneously. In addition, if ur taking AP Phys C, the lambda substitutions can be a ***** (shouts at teacher, GIMME SOME LAMBDA). So are visualizing all of the necessary dx-dr-dv-dwhatever substitutions that you need to do.

Hey,

I took AP Calc AB and AP Stat in my junior year. I had to sacrifice an arts course (meh). As a senior, I am taking BC Calc and Discrete Math. If you can somehow do that that I guess that would really look good on your academic resume. I had to drop a social studies (was going to take art history AP, but that is not going to help me in college at all) to fit in the arts I let go of in junior year.

Good Luck! From personal experience, I found Calculus more "fun" than Statistics. Statistics gets boring as HELL (unless you like the material :P) but the never-ending plethora of problems in Calculus makes it enjoyable.

I would take Ap Calculus, currently taking pre-calculus which seems to me very easy. Though it really depends on the person, I know many students who's having a hard time in pre-calculus.

Pre-Calc and AP Calc are very different, actually. But AP Calc really isn't that difficult. I took it after skipping Pre-Calc and got a 4 on the test (B- and B+ in the class, but that was because of other reasons). AP Stats is a mediocre AP class, and doesn't have as much effect as AP Calc does.

Compared to regular calculus, I'd say AP Calc does a few more complex things, like related rates, linearization, and advanced derivatives and integrals. Not much more, though, cause you'll still have the same derivative, integral, limit, etc., stuff. You'd be better off with AP.

Echo, what do you mean when you say AP Stat doesn't have "as much effect as AP Calc"?

trust me ap stats is a complete waste of time and you will learn nothing. Don't listen to the crap about how "the stuff you learn in stats is more useful".

step up and take AP calc, it's even eaiser than pre-calc lol.

^ i second the easier than pre-calc
i would take ap calc ab, or even regular calc, over stats. at the very least, you won't be as bored.

Have both classes currently - I would say Calculus AB is probably easier, Stats is more relevant to the real world, both are important classes that are worthwhile if you can make room.

@ rsxwheeeeee: I mean that I think it carries more weight than AP Stats does. As in looks better on a transcript. Both would be good though, too, unless you take BC instead.

Stat is sort of useless at the High School level, though I can't really compare it very well to my Calc experience since I took Calc as a Freshmen. Stats tends to be the class where all the slackers go while Calc is where the more intelligent people who care go to.

thanks for all the advice guys, but the question is not AP Calc or AP Stat...
Yes, they do have AP Calc at my school but there now way I would take it. Math is not my strong suit, history and english are (which i'm taking aps in)

So... my math teacher gave me a choice between REGULAR Calc and AP stat, so which out of those would look better NOT AP CALC
Calc may be easy to some of you who are also taking a million APs, but not only does my school prefer students to overload on aps i don't want to be completely overwhelmed either.

so, for the last time REGULAR Calc or AP Stat?
