im a fall extension student trying to head for haas, and i was wondering what math course i should take for my first semester in berkeley…math 16a? math 1a? math 1b? math 53??? …i got a 5 on the AP calc AB exam…and hopefully get a 5 on ap calc bc this year…please help if u can thanks…

In theory, Math 1a and 1b are supposed to be the equivalents of AP Calc AB and CB, respectively. The Math 16 series is an easier alternative, but if you're going into Haas, they're going to want you to take the 1a-1b set if you choose to.

Note, that if you get a 5 on your BC exam, then you aren't required to take Math 1a or 1b. I suggest you do, as if you want to take more advanced math (Math 53 and 54, for example), then it will be a welcome refresher.

From what I hear, 53 is pretty much rehashing 1a/1b, but 54 is actually new, useful stuff. That's all hearsay, of course, but it makes sense.

oh thanks, but i heard that haas wants math 16A ....but im not sure....any more people have a say in this?

yeah from the prereqs info:
Math (Calculus). One semester of calculus is required - Math 1A, 1B, 16A or 16B.

but if you score a 5 on BC calc, you can place out of calculus completely and take a more advanced course

1A and 1B are supposed to be notorious weeder classses
is that the same for 16A and 16B?

noo ideaaaaaaaaaa

No, 16A and 16B aren't nearly as notorious as 1A and 1B in terms of grading harshness. They're also a bit easier in terms of material.

That being said, Haas will want people who challenge themselves and not settle for the easiest path and blah blah blah, so the 1A-1B set is probably what you want to take if you're looking to get into Haas.

16a and 16b is DEFINETELY not as hard as 1a and 1b.

well according to the FPF website.....
Math 16A-16B covers much of the same basic topics as Math 1A-1B with the exception of in-depth calculus. It is less rigorous and demanding. Math 16A-16B is a terminal one-year calculus sequence required for the Haas School of Business, see

does anyone know whether berkeley will accept math credit from community colleges out of state,? i know they will consider it, tho ideas as to whether they will accept? thanks

btw, i have credit for calculus 3 multivariable
