im a little confused by the dining plans. when they say 7 meals, or 10 meals, do they mean you could only eat there for 7 and 10 meals a week? i think that's a bit absurd. what kind of a person would choose to eat lunch on campus for three days and go out to eat the other 4 days. anyway, can anyone tell me which meal plan is the best and the most bang for your buck? thanks

You also get big red bucks w/ those meal plans. You can use the BRB to cover lunch.

so which one would you say is sufficient? traditional? basic?

well that depends on the individual person. 10 meals a week is good for me. even 7 a week is fine since i rarely have lunch at a dining hall.

I'd say 7 or 10 is fine...I'd also say get a new username, harvardman.

7 or 10 definitely. I started on 14 my freshman year and dropped down to 10 within the first 2 weeks when I realized 14 was way too many.

for the freshmen who want to get to know their hallmates, get whatever meal plan everyone else is on. then you won't have the "sorry, i'm out of meals so i can't go with you guys" or the "does anyone want to go with me? please? i've still got meals to use up". usually everyone starts with 14, drops to 10 by the end of the second week, and is down to 7 by the next semester.

and harvardman, you might need to be a cornell student before calling things absurd. then you'll see what's actually absurd and what's not. and food and meal plans are actually one of the more reasonable things at cornell.

I thought we already registered for the meal plans...?

yeah, rapport, but you can change them until a couple weeks in.

harvardman, the important point is that you'll probably eat at least two meals a day, but you'll hate your life if you only eat them in the "all-you-care-to-eat" dining halls. BRB food is better, more convenient, and way easier to find around campus. that's why most people end up only needing 10 or less. also, don't underestimate Wingz.

yea get 10 meals a week. youll prob eat dinner in the dining halls most nights (but i highly suggest going out in the commons or collegetown on like a saturday), and you will get sick of the food (even thoguh its good) pretty soon. i had 10, ate most dinners, brunch on saturday/sunday, and 1 lunch a week in the dining hall. usually you are on central campus during lunch time, so you can use big red bucks. if you run out of BRBs, you can add more and if youre parents ask, tell them the meal plan was less then the cost of the 14 meals per week so you can make uup for the cost there i guess. 500 brb's were pretty sufficient as long as you arent doing a ton of coffee every day and arent eating out late at nights after dinner at bear necessities.

can you use BRBs at the commons or collegetown?

nope, you can use city bucks at some places, though

Can you get "real" meals using BRB's, or are they mostly snacks and coffee?

You can get into the dining hall using BRBs, though that's really expensive. You can also order real food from any of the a la carte places (sandwiches, salads, pastas, burgers, pizza, whatever...). You can use BRBs at Bear Necessities, which is basically a convienence store.

should students living in West Campus, including transfers get the house plans or does it make more sense just to get the bear plans.

The cost between the 14 and the 10 meals-a-week plan is minimal (to my memory it was about 100 dollars), so I went with the traditional plan.

In terms of West Campus - you must get a house plan if you are living in one of the houses (it's the alternative to the 'bear' plans). I don't know if the Transfer Center is considered to be a part of a house, but if it is, then you will have to get one of those while living there (stupid rule, but unlimited swipes in those dining halls is pretty cool - no wasting meals for just a bowl of cereal). Consult the transfer information they gave you in terms of meal plans (I'm sure it mentions if you need to get a meal plan in that, or if it's optional).

rapport, you absolutely can get "real" meals with BRB--add breakfast lunch and sometimes dinner to snacks and coffee

thanks ceruleanyankee

500 enough for all that? for four months? nekkensj?
