My son will be a freshman in the fall. Which dorm - men's or coed is the best?
Thanks!!!

columbia hall was 90% boys when i lived there. its suite-style and is right next to capstone (where there’s a dining hall) and most of the intro level freshman classes will be in the buildings right by there (gambrell, humanities etc). There are so many all-girls dorms that the only places boys can live are Columbia, Capstone, Bates, Bates west (although bates and bates west are wayyyyy far away from campus), and maxy-honors college only.

Thanks! What do you know about Capstone, Mcbryde, or Maxcy? Did you like Columbia?

Capstone is mainly only given to people who are capstone scholars. The rooms are nice and newer and bigger than most other dorms. You get your own bathroom, and of course theres pros and cons of that especially with guys. I personally hate mcbryde I think it looks like a piece of crap. I have never been in side but the location kind of sucks and the outside looks ugly. Maxcy are the honors dorms now, they are nice but i heard they are switching them to something else. You can also stay in the Roost and Preston if youre a guy

agreed about mcbryde!! theyre in the process of tearing them down and they are AWFUL…we called them Mcdirty or the dirty D (cause there are A, B, C, D wings) but i think some of the wings have been torn down. avoid them if possible!

oh and maxcy was only honors college. i think it still will be unless the new Honors Dorms are finished…no idea when that will happen though

awesome info. we were kind of leaning towards mcbride…but will avoid now. thanks!

Maxcy will turn into a regular freshman dorm when the new Honors college dorm comes online (supposedly this fall 09)
Maxcy is a nice sized dorm(good size to get to know your dormmates) in a good location, but the room sizes vary wildly due to the age of the original building. S had the smallest room imaginable there but enjoyed living there. Some of his friends had enormous rooms…its the luck of the draw.
Its suite style, that is, two rooms (4 occupants) share an adjoining bathroom. Theres a first floor lounge, a classroom, laundry ,kitchen and pool table/TV room in the basement.
If its open to regular freshman next year,I’d highly recommend it.
