Hi, I'm currently planning to major in accounting but I have no idea what to minor in. Before that, I have some questions. Does your minor matter when you look for a job, especially in the accounting field? In Baruch College, it is required to choose one out of this set of minors and then after that you can choose to do another minor in a business area if wish to.

Given that set of minors(Tier III - General Education Requirements - Baruch College), I'm deciding between psychology and economics. Then for another minor(optional) in a business area, I have no clue. There are so many of them: Economics and Finance, Entrepreneurship, Operation/Human Resource Management, Marketing, International Business, Finance, etc. By the time I finish all of my classes including my first minor but excluding my second optional minor, I'll have around 124-130 credits. Plus, I'm planning to go for Masters so I'm going to reach 150 credits regardless.

Sorry for the long post but to summarize everything, should I take the second minor, which will add 9 more credits to what I've mentioned before? If so, which one is relevant to my major or appealing to recruiters? Does it really matter especially when I want to become a CPA? Thanks!

Both Psych and Econ are popular minors.
Since you’re doing Acct, I think Econ is a better choice
when most accountants deal with numbers not clients.
Then, Finance and Acct would be a good combo.
But if you can choose business law,
I’d definitely recommend you to do it.
The best accountants know how to play with the principles and law
to manipulate the numbers in a LEGAL way.

I would give a business law a consideration but I haven’t taken a class in it yet to see if it interests me but I will be next semester. And yes, I think I am going for Economics!

By the way, does your minor really matter when looking for a job? Would they look at me differently if I minor in psychology? Rather than economics? I’m asking this because I care about my gpa more and a lot of people say that psychology minor is a gpa booster. Please help! :)

GPA matters more. With that said these are what I’d consider the best minors given that you want to go into accounting

bus law - obvious
finance - obvious
statistics - good for audit or risk management
econ - good for transfer pricing
comp sci - good for IT consulting or risk management
psych - shows you have “client skills”

Honestly, there are lots of good choices for a minor to accompany a major in accounting. Certainly finance could be a decent choice. However, I would like to offer some other options:

Computer Science or software engineering. This comes in very handy for designing and modifying accounting internal control systems. You can’t go wrong here.
2.Criminology: Having this background can be great if you want to be a forensic accountant.
3.Philosophy or English: You are probably wondering if I lost my mind suggesting these minors. However, a study among top accounting firm partners has shown that their biggest complaint about their associates is that these newer associates lack good writing and critical reading skills. Minoring in this will inculcate some greatly needed skills for you and make you stand out among accounting students who apply for jobs.

I wouldn’t recommend economics due to its lack of marketability with a minor. I also wouldn’t recommend either business law in undergrad or statistics since you will get plenty of this as part of your accounting program. The same can be said for finance since you will probably be taking some finance courses as part of your curriculum. Moreover, an essential part of finance is an understanding of the time value of money. This is taught, however, in intermediate accounting.

As far as phychology, I don’t know enough about those courses to opine.

Ktbui1, I don’t know what the real estate minor or major entails. Thus, I can’t opine on that. I would doubt, however, if it would make you more marketable.

Thanks taxguy. I’m actually considering to minor in finance after my 1st minor in psychology. The only reason I’m minoring in psychology is that I want to boost my GPA up since I know my accounting classes will drag my GPA down. After that, I’m considering going for another minor in finance to help me understand more about business and hopefully spice up my resume for the recruiters.

As far as minoring in economics, I’m also thinking about doing that as well. It’s between finance and economics for my 2nd minor. This is because I’m planning or hoping to open up a business and economics will definitely help maximize my profit through its content.

I’ve spoken with my advisor a few days ago regarding this dilemma and she said that minor only plays a very small role when it comes to getting a job. She also said that it is best to go for something that you like rather than something that will put a burden upon your GPA due to the difficulty of the courses. I agree with her; however, I think that the role of a minor really depends on the mindset of a recruiter.

^ DD school’s acct dept has the similar view with your advisor. From its faq webpage,
"
If you decide to minor or declare a second major, choose an area that you really want to learn about.
Our research does not support the notion that students with double majors or minors have better chance at finding good jobs than those who do not
"

^^^ A_mom, I have also not seen any dramatic job improvement from having an additional minor. I guess if someine has a strong interest in a subject outside of accounting, why not take some courses in it? However, I don’t think it will drastically improve job chances.
