Which NC schools for average student?

Thanks, Packmom. The size interested my daughter because her high school is very large and she really wants small classes in college. They have an education major but the department is very small. Her SATs place her above the 75% percentile so she might get merit add. She really liked what she saw on their website.

One of DD's best friends will be going to Appalachian State as a music education major (vocal) this fall. App has a very strong music program and great job placement in both music ed and music therapy, and there's plenty of school spirit with the success of the football and basketball teams. If DD's out-of-state plans don't work out, she'll be at App for music next year also.

Over a year later....
My daughter was accepted at all the NC state schools to which she applied.
UNC-A
UNC-G
UNC-C
ECU
WCU
plus Guilford and Belmont Abbey.
As I mentioned in another thread, she chose Belmont Abbey (originally her last choice!)
Stats (in order to help others)..SAT's 500M 500W 550V
GPA 3.7 weighted; top 25% of grad. class. NO AP's only Honors classes.
Lots of summer community service, but none during the school year.
Two extra curriculars.
Thanks to everyone, and hope this is helpful to someone else.

Found this info re tuition, etc. (for unc-pembroke--one of D's friends went to the school when he was in NC with the military. He liked it so much that his brother moved to NC to go to same school. He said the class sizes were small and you got lots of professor attention):

Minimum cost for full-time undergraduate living on campus with meal plan for the 2008- 2009 year for Residents of North Carolina is $9,574.00 and for Non-Residents is $18,834.00.

This is AMAZING! Cheaper to send a kid to a unc as OOS than to send him to our state school. Is this about the same COA for all unc schools?

ellemenope..Got this info. from College Foundation of NC... the costs listed are for tution and R&B only (as we all know those pesky fees and books plus other little extras always raise the price).

NC State..in state $10,571,oos $22,769
East Carolina Univ....instate,$9581, oos$20,095
UNC-Wilmington....instate $9413,oos$19,376
UNC Greensboro...instate $8509, oos $19,777
UNC-Charlotte...instate $8494,oos $19,907
UNC-Asheville...instate $8537, oos $19,527
Western Carolina Univ.....instate $7490, oos $17073

These are just some examples. You can see that they are pretty close. The bigger more in demand schools are generally a little higher. (didn't list UNC-CH because everyone is familiar with it. It does cost the most of the state schools).

Mom0809..Congrats to your D on all the acceptances. I hope she'll be very happy at Belmont Abbey.

Thanks, PackMom.

Congrats mom0809 on your daughter's acceptances!!!

And those tuition and room and board for all the UNC schools is the reason I dragged 5 high school kiddos from CA 4 years ago! Thanks Packmom for listing. Even Chapel Hill is still within ballpark of those figures as well.

Grad school tuition for in-state is even MORE reasonable. Especially vet and med school.

Kat

Just an addition here...if you have a student in the fine arts...consider North Carolina School of the Arts. It is also a NC school. They are actually considering a name change to University of North Carolina School of the Arts. The price there is also reasonable and the arts programs are excellent. Winston-Salem is a highly supportive arts community as well.

My daughter is attending Queens University next year. She is in love with the school. I would be happy to answer any questions. You cannot really get a feel for the school by just looking at the "numbers" or their website.

Thanks for good wishes, everyone.
Yes, the UNC schools' tuition are all very good if you're out of state. They're GREAT if you're in-state.
The slight drawback is that they have to accept 82% of their students from in-state, so it's supposed to be harder to be accepted if you're out of state (especially Chapel Hill). HOWEVER....UNC-Charlotte informed us that they have never reached the cap on their out of state acceptances. So, anyone out there who might consider Charlotte, it's a great school undergoing immense expansion. I couldn't believe the number of new buildings that have been recently erected nor the ones that are still in progress!
I've read great things about Queens U. too.

I think UNC-CH is prob. the only school in the UNC system that reaches it's cap. on oos students.

That's good for everyone to know.
