I want to do public relations. Which NYU school offers that major? My low GPA makes me want to apply to Gallatin since I heard it was easier to get into but I don't really understand how Gallatin's program even works...

go to the nyu website and look at their different colleges… I would say CAS but if you have a low GPA it would be pretty hard to get into CAS…

How low is your GPA? Don’t rule out CAS just because of GPA - maybe your test scores, EC’s and essays could make up for it?

I would suggest you look at The New School as well :)

Gallatin is not easy to get in though. I got denied from Gallatin last semester with 3.6/4.0. I applied as transfer. Gallatin is independent study program. So it has very unique curriculum.

Steinhardt has the Media, Culture, Communications major. We have classes on public relations. Plus, it’s a little easier to get into Steinhardt than CAS or Gallatin. We also offer a cross-school minor with Stern, so you can take Marketing classes in certain areas, depending on what kind of PR you want to go into. I’m an MCC senior, and lots of my friends want to go into PR.

Hey,
I can’t speak for other schools within NYU, but I can tell you a little about how Gallatin works.
Gallatin operates off an individualized degree program, which means that, yes, you can major in whatever you want. That might seem like sort of a joke, but Gallatin is very serious in its philosophy. Gallatin’s program allows you to take charge of your education entirely, which can be both daunting and exciting. With this in mind, you need to be mature about your major because Gallatin is not going to give you a long list of requirements to meet a standard PR major.
A lot of students mistakenly choose Gallatin because they can double-major without actually double-majoring, but a Gallatin concentration is not simply a list of topics, but rather a unifying theme. For example, a Writing for TV major might study screenwriting, but also psychology in order to better understand how characters might act in given situations.
Gallatin is not easier to get into, so be careful. There is a heavy emphasis on writing at Gallatin, so your essays will be very important. For this reason, if you have a kickass essay but otherwise low numbers, you’re not out of luck with Gallatin admissions. Also, the admissions staff is really looking for a unique type of student, not just someone that wants to (as I said before) easily double-major, so make sure you fit the mold (not to sound contradictory).
If you have any other Gallatin questions, please feel free to ask, and I’ll try to answer. Personally, I love Gallatin and have no regrets about choosing it. However, I know people that would hate it - it’s not for everyone.
Good luck!
