Which of my top schools am I getting into?

Junior living in Illinois
SAT I: 2260
ACT: 34
SAT II: pending (Math II, Chem, US History, Physics)
Rank: 7/130
GPA: 3.85

National Merit Commended Scholar
National Honor Society
JROTC Leadership Bowl Captain
JROTC Logistics Specialist
Math Team
250+ hrs. comm service

Schools:
Cornell
Johns Hopkins
Rice
Duke
Vanderbilt
Georgetown
UNC-out of state
U of I-in state
University of Edinburgh (in England: if you don't know about this one, don't bother)

Which of the schools above am I getting into and which ones am I not getting into (just copy the list and mark "in" or "not in")

Is the GPA weighted or unweighted?

It’s actually in Scotland, or you could say Great Britain. But it’s definitely not in England.

I think you’ll get into Edinburgh my friend got in and didn’t really do that much impressive. Are you looking at St. Andrew’s also in scotland?? It’s great too and you’d have a shot

My GPA is unweighted 3.84, weighted it is 4.77

What’s the breakdown of your SAT scores?

Not knowing your ECs, essays, or recs, it’s impossible to say for sure, but U of I is a pretty safe bet, UNC is pretty safe too. Outside of those (and the British schools which I cannot claim to know anything about) you have a decent shot, but there’s definitely no guarantee. But this is my guess:

Cornell - not in
Johns Hopkins - not in
Rice - not in (but possible depending on essay, recs, ECs)
Duke - not in
Vanderbilt - in
Georgetown - not in
UNC-out of state - in
U of I-in state - in
University of Edinburgh - ?

Good Luck with your applications, you definitely have at least a chance at most of these schools!

wow dont get disheartened by sirensong’s predictions…a lot of ur chances have to do with chance.

we cant predict ur future for you as much as we would like to =/

also work on the ECs! ur scores are great!

Sirensong’s predictions are quite conservative. You have a great chance at all of these schools except Duke, where I think you need just a bit more to make yourself a truly competitive candidate.

UNC OOS is not safe, unless you have some sort of hook…ie, minority, first generation, child of an alum etc.

I have friends who were rejected with stats similar as yours…UNC OOS is quite competitive. I would say it’s a match, not a safety.

A lot will ride on your essays, interviews, recs, and how you tie your ECs together. Your ECs on a list look quite weak, but if you were able to incorporate something about you and one of your main ECs in an essay and make it meaningful, then you will have a good shot.

Do you have any other stats? Male or female? Race? Those have a bit of an impact. For example, if you look a the common data set for Vanderbilt, you will see that there is a 4% difference in the acceptance rate of guys vs girls (guys is easier to get in). Also how many APs and Honors have you taken?

Good luck, objectively you have done great in high school! Just knock them out with great essays, recs, and whatever else and I think you have a shot at all those schools.

I know people at UEdinburgh, it seems like a great school. I don’t think it’s as selective as some other schools on your list.

Hello. I am applying to the following colleges: Caltech, Stanford, Harvey Mudd, Berkeley, and Georgia Tech. I am going into engineering. I am not sure how high of a chance I have of getting into these schools. I was hoping to hear your opinions based on this information:
AP/college courses taken/will take: Chemistry, Calculus BC, English language and composition, English literature, Physics, Economics, Statistics, and possibly differential equations.
SAT I: math:750 Writing: 710 Reading comp: 640 (I moved here in 7th grade so I am hoping that colleges will go a little easy on the reading part. Though I am taking the SAT I again in october; going for at least 2200)
SAT II: math IIC: 800 Chemistry:780 Spanish:taking later
extracurricular activities: UCLA high school research internship, Los Angeles math circle, executive board of school’s honor society, guitar, swimming, water polo, ACE (architecture, construction, engineering) program, etc.
Volunteer service: 4 years at UBH

Please don’t take my predictions too seriously, it was just a guess, and there’s absolutely no way to tell by just looking at your GPA & SAT. If you are literally nothing more than those numbers, my chances are probably relatively close, but otherwise, don’t pay much attention to them. Your stats are very good, and you will be fine getting into a good school.

Sirensong: it’s cool, I like preparing for the worst and hoping for the best too, creates a lot of shock value with stuff

I’m taking 3 AP classes this year and will take in total 9 AP classes with 8 AP tests. I’m an Indian (Asian Indian) male. As far as other stuff goes, I don’t have a whole lot of leadership positions in clubs and stuff, but my high school has an ROTC battalion and I’m a Staff Officer of the battalion. The school also marks students on how good their leadership is in the classroom and outside with a leadership GPA (mine’s is 4.53/5.0, Ranked 4th). I also consider myself associated with the quality of compromise. I like being the mediator in arguments and am always very impressed with figures in history that have shown compromise and have also been seen as excellent communicators and leaders (Henry Clay is basically my hero). Is that something I can use for an essay, btw? Or is it too corny?

You could definitely incorporate Henry Clay into one of your essays, as long as you don’t make it the trite “My idol is Henry Clay, he is amazing, and my goal in life is to be exactly like him.” The leadership GPA is really interesting, and your high rank combined with your purportedly selfless personality should definitely help your chances for admission, especially if you interview.

Ok here we go:

Cornell - 30%
Johns Hopkins - 40%
Rice - 30%
Duke - 25%
Vanderbilt - 60%
Georgetown - 60%
UNC-out of state - 60%
U of I-in state - safety
University of Edinburgh- nooooo idea

Your ECs are the weakest part of your app, so spice it up by sharing your passion for what you do with JROTC and the math team!
