So there are 6 topics to chose from on the Common Application. Which one is picked most often? I would think the topic of choice.

By they way, I know there is a 250 word minimum, but is there a maximum?

Here are the topics for those that need a refresher.

1 Evaluate a significant experience, achievement, risk you have taken, or ethical dilemma you have faced and its impact on you.
2 Discuss some issue of personal, local, national, or international concern and its importance to you.
3 Indicate a person who has had a significant influence on you, and describe that influence.
4 Describe a character in fiction, a historical figure, or a creative work (as in art, music, science, etc.) that has had an influence on you, and explain that influence.
5 A range of academic interests, personal perspectives, and life experiences adds much to the educational mix. Given your personal background, describe an
experience that illustrates what you would bring to the diversity in a college community, or an encounter that demonstrated the importance of diversity to you.
6 Topic of your choice.

yea i think picking topic of your choice is the safest bet. would adcom look down on you for picking topic of your choice if they thought it really should have fit under one of the other topics?

I think its good to go with 1~5 on the Common App, because most supplements allow you to go with your "topic of choice" (ex. Yale, Harvard) on their second essay.

Unless you are applying to U of Chicago that is.

Actually, wouldn't it be better writing two essays, one from #1-5 and one #6? that way you can use your #6 for the other ones (other ivies) that don't have the extra essay option and use the other one for Harvard and Yale
