You can’t look this up yourself? Pretty basic IMHO
Nearly every one will consider the potential major(s) you state. It doesn’t matter whether they officially place you in a particular program. They can still look at the major and your prep, the relevant activities/experiences, and your thinking, maturity and judgment. Plus, they’re looking to balance how many kids think they may go into certain depts, etc.
@lookingforward but don’t they expect plenty of students to switch majors? If so then wouldn’t that defeat the purpose of limiting the number of people in certain majors
@Oregon2016 i tried to, I couldn’t find much.
Switching majors happens, sure. But at the moment you apply and are reviewed, they are looking at your thinking. An easy example is engineering. Some kids apply because it “sounds interesting,” though they don’t seem to know what it is, have the math-sci strengths, experiences, and can’t show that mindset. For various majors, the colleges have their own ways of predicting how many will stick versus discover a new interest.
For your gpa, eg, if you state physics, they’ll like strong grades and rigor in math-sci, some related ECs (and that mindset.) And good LoRs, at least one from a math or sci teacher. And so on.
You couldn’t find that some of these universities require you to apply to a specific school within the university?
@oregon2016 no i mean like do they determine if you can get in or not based on the major you apply to. for example, VT engineering is a lot harder to get into then VT general studies
You say in another thread that you have a sibling at Columbia yet the first school on the list here where you “couldn’t find much” is Columbia.
@oregon2016 okay…but I doubt my sister knows if Columbia decides to accept people based on the major they selected. she just applied for the history major. I doubt most Columbia students even know this specific admissions process detail. lol bye
The fact that they got accepted to Columbia and then enrolled at Columbia and now attend Columbia yet do not “know this specific admissions process detail” should tell you that it is irrelevant.
How many students do you really think know the admissions process, just because they got admitted? OP’s siser stated what she stated and got in.
@oregon2016 Except it is relevant…I wish to know which major I should apply to. If they admit based on major then I will choose an easier major to get into like political science. If they admit and disregard the whole major thing, then I will choose business.
And for your information she now goes to grad school at Juilliard and no longer attends Columbia. It was not important to her which major she selected because she was at the top of her class in HS, a national pianist winner, and could get into any major she wanted to. Even rocket science.
Many of the schools in your list don’t even offer undergrad business majors/minors/concentrations. You are wasting valuable time trying to game the system by finding an “easy” major at the most competitive schools in the country. You are deluding yourself with the notion that poli sci is an “easier” major and insulting every poli sci professor and student at these schools. You started 2 other threads this afternoon on this same misguided belief. Applying to these 14 schools plus one safety is not a smart strategy given your GPA and financial aid need. Your other threads show you are accomplished and ambitious but did you ask total strangers which sport is “easier” before your first skating lesson? Good luck, you need it.
@oregon2016 I don’t mean to come off as if I am insulting the political science department…I am very interested in that department and even if I were to major in business then I would probably minor or take many classes relating to political science. Its just the truth that business is competitive because so many people want to end up in Wall Street.
I am applying to 15 schools is because I’ve never visited any colleges except Columbia, because I was not allowed to (my parents thought that it was a waste of time, plus I never had time). My school deflates GPA and is very competitive, and I really do believe that I can get into at least a few schools on that list besides my safety (:
@Oregon2016 Your responses to this kid boggle my mind, you say this is such a basic question, then how about just answer it? You are coming across a little harshly. I don’t think this kid is trying to game the system, just trying to find out if you select the major you are interested in on your application, could that possibly hurt your chances of being accepted? It’s a valid question and most students change their majors 2-3 times before graduating… @camwow, I see your question was answered on another thread. Good luck to you!
If the college admits by major or division, then it is likely to be hard to change majors after enrolling, since the more selective majors are that way because of capacity reasons.
@Fishnlines29 Does the OP think she has an answer, because it looks like she wants 14 unique responses- 1 for each school on her list. Look at the title of this thread. And what I said is that this basic information on declaring a specific program, college, or major (if required!) is contained in the application material for each 14 admissions offices. So, for example, just looking at the mobile site for BC admissions it states an applicant must submit to 1 of 4 divisions- the arts & sciences school, the business school, the education school, or the nursing school. OP doesn’t seem to know this. That’s lazy. Then she wants to know if it is easier to get into BC’s business school or BC’s A&S school (which is the subject of several CC threads already.) That’s gaming and lazy.
Im right here you know (:
@Oregon2016 ^ AND of course I know that. I know that BC wants me to apply to one of the four schools, everyone does. But thats not what I was asking. Of course I looked at the websites AND their FAQs but it didn’t say anything about if they admit based on major or not. I thought the point of the College Confidential forum was to ask questions you couldn’t find on the websites??
