The reason I'm asking the question here is that when I emailed the universities they get confused and don't understand what is a Polytechnic Diploma (except Cooper Union, which said they do recognise, but that is a specialised college, not an all-rounded university which I hope for). I hope it's not because they don't recognise Polytechnic Diplomas. Polytechnics in Singapore all say 'we are widely recognised worldwide' yet they don't even know what is a Polytechnic Diploma. Those who are reading this article who don't know what is a Polytechnic Diploma, it is a rather basic qualification of a certain field, just like a Bachelor's Degree, BUT at a lower standard and is more vocational than a degree. When it is recognised by a university for admission, Diploma holders get the benefit of Advanced Standings of about 1-2 years. The admission requirement for a Diploma programme is a certain minimum grade of the GCE 'O' Levels, which secondary school students graduate with (just like UK's GCSE). An example of study would be O Levels>Diploma in Architecture in Singapore Polytechnic>2nd year of Bachelor's Degree in Architecture in National University Of Singapore, University Of New South Wales, etc. More info: PolyGuide

The point here is, are Diplomas really recognised in the USA, Canada, and the UK, especially in the universities listed below? If they are, what kind of preparations should I put into my applications to ensure I stand a chance to get into these universities? Are SATs/ACTs/A Levels required? What other things should I include in my applications?

Hi ,
It has been a long time since you posted. I got my polytechnics diploma from Nanyang Polytechnic and am planning to go to one of the states’ universities this year. I have taken both SAT and subject tests. I emailed to a few of institutions and some of them such as Cornell and UC Berkeley demanded me to apply as a transfer. Sadly, Princeton replied me as they consider me as a transfer student and they don’t have a transfer application process.
How did you end up ?

I’m not sure all universities understand the status of a “Polytechnic” in Singapore. In most countries, it’s a post-ALevel university, but in Singapore it’s a sort of STEM high school that is post-O’Level.
Email universities again and word it this way in order to avoid any confusion about the meaning of the word “polytechnic”.
“Greetings,
After my O’Levels in Singapore (similar to the British GCSE’s) I continued to a 2-year “Polytechnic”, a sort of specialized school where we don’t prepare ALevels but rather several STEM subjects. We get a diploma called “Polytechnic Diploma”. I would like to apply to the US and I know that some students get “advanced standing” for this diploma. Does it mean that I apply as a freshman or as a transfer student? Thank you very much. Sincerely, ././.”

A Poly degree is very common in Asia. I can’t understand why those uni don’t understand. Did you apply for first year admission or transfer? A poly graduate should apply for transfers into a us 4 year college.

Thank you MYOSS1634 . I will send them again. @artloversplus , some of the institutions want me to apply as first year but some as transfer. I will apply according to them , opening two accounts.

Hello, I would like to know more on how did the application for UC Berkeley went through. I’m an aeronautical engineering diploma student at sp who wants to pursue my undergraduate studies in Mechanical Engineering. Do you know what is the academic requirement and should I take both SAT, SAT subject test and ACT test? I hope that you could reply me, thank you.
