Which of these ideas should I choose for Common App essay?

I know I want to write about a major aspect of my personality: love of learning/theory and its application.
I think I will either write about driving my dog to McDonald's to demonstrate Pavlovian principles or about a slightly more serious topic, such as applying knowledge of psychological studies to my younger sister in order to help motivate her.
The first would not be an attempt at humor or anything- I would still be fairly serious- but I think it's a bit lighter and more entertaining. However, the second would fit well with the rest of my application, which shows how family responsibilities have been an important part of my life through high school.

Choose the first one… You said, however, your application concentrates on family responsibilities; so, why don’t write an essay showing another quality?

But this is just my opinion.

I agree with hopingforbetter, admissions wants to get know an applicant as much as possible, so writing a different side of you not mentioned in the rest of your application is best.

Ah, thanks. I didn’t think of that. The first one would certainly be better, then; it is unrelated to family and more about portraying my personality and qualities.

Yes, adcoms want to glean something about the strengths you have that are relevant to college. Family resps are important, but many kids focus on that and miss the chance to tie it to college skills.

The dog topic sounds intriguing. Depending on how well you do it, you could show lots of college related positives.

Remember the bit about using “show, not tell.” I’d say try it, see if it flows easily. Best of luck.
