Which of these professions should I go for

Hi guys,

It would be great if you smart people could give me some advice here. I am from New Zealand and wanting to go to Australia or the USA after I get a degree. Right now I have been accepted into Pharmacy (University of Otago), Optometry(University of Auckland), and Engineering(University of Auckland) all at the bachelors level. I was wondering which one of these degrees/professions would be generally the most useful in finding a good job in America. I don't mind doing a further 2 years or so extra study in America to get a masters or phd as long as I dont need to completely requalify. I want to consider job prospects, satisfaction and pay as these 3 are my priority. Could anyone with experience/knowledge in these areas guide me towards which one of these degrees seem the best to go with?

Thank you

engineering
but choose the one which interests you the most!

I’d say engineering is the one that would give you the best shot at a work visa in the US. Most of the H1B visas allowing foreigners to work in the states go to engineers.

There’s no guarantee though, even if you can find an employer to sponsor you it’s a lottery. And if you win you can only work for the one employer (they dont need to pay you well) and the visa is for 3 years though often renewable.

Though I’d hesitate to plan my life around this. There’s a lot of pressure with the bad economy to let fewer foreigners in to work and the number of visas has gone down. Then there’s outsourcing, much of what used to be engineered in the states is now happening in Asia.

Australia must be much easier!
