Which of these schools would be best for me? (Ohio schools)

I'm a high school senior in Ohio, and I'm planning on only applying to schools in Ohio. So far I've been accepted at Ohio State, University of Cincinnati, Ohio Northern, University of Dayton, and Wright State. I am waiting to hear back from Case Western.

For becoming a national merit finalist, OSU, Wright State, and UC would pay tuition. UC would also pay board and Wright State would pay for room and board, books, etc.

I'm planning on majoring in biomedical engineering and doing pre-med. I'm considering double majoring in molecular biology and molecular biology instead.

I want there to be interesting things to do around campus, but I don't plan on drinking at all.

Which would be the best choice for me in your opinion? Thanks!

Class Rank: 8/600ish
GPA: 4.0 (unweighted); 4.6 (weighted)
ACT: 34
National Merit Semifinalist

I would say Case. Even though from what you have just said, it may not be the best financially for you, Its really a good premed school. I heard that they offer lots of assistance for their premed students.

Thanks. Case was my first choice, but I started to learn towards OSU due to the cost and the fact that OSU offers genetics, which I'm considering along with molecular biology.

Definitely consider Wright State and UD. The Air Force is moving a good number of Health related jobs to the Dayton area at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. There will be all kinds of opps for internships and interesting research.

It should definitely be Case or OSU... you'd probably get a lot of money from both, as both are generous with financial/merit aid, especially for NSMFs.

find a way to go to Oberlin, for heaven's sake!!!

Molecular Genetic Major at tOSU rocks!! lol

Considering the fact that I have done a lot of research of my own on these Ohio schools to see how far my 30 ACT/ 2100 SAT would take me, I can honestly say that Case is DEFINITELY your best bet, with Univeristy of Dayotn in a VERY CLOSE second. I am sure that Case will almost entirely pay your way, and it is a well-respected degree. However, UD will pay your enitre way for sure, you will have connections to the base and the awesome graduate college and Air Force Research Laboratory there. You probably would also make the cut to become one of the 30 or so Berry Scholars, which is very prestigious.

Still, UC and Wright State are way below your abilities, and Ohio State is too large to grant you the kind of opportunities, specific prestiege, or care that Case or UD would, so I would highly consider trimming your options to only those two. (maybe leave ONU in just for kicks, as well)

A question for you, though- Why not Miami? Don't worry, I don't like Miami, either, but why don't you? Maybe I can use your answer to take the puzzled look off people's faces when I tell them that I am not interested in Miami.

Also, come chance me at Small-Town Junior looking for advice and chances for big-name schools thanks! (you don't have to)

Thanks! As for the Miami, the major options they have for their pre-med program are chemistry, zoology, and anthropology (none of which I want to do.) They also don't have some of the majors I'm considering. The more general reasons why I don't like it are more difficult to explain. I didn't feel like I would necessarily like the kids that go there. I think that it would be a lot harder finding friends, because a lot of the students there are the type of people I really don't get along with. Overall, I really didn't like the vibe I got from it. People wonder why I don't like it either...

Yeah, that's it, the vibe. I didn't like it either, I guess. I know it sounds kind of stupid when you you shoot down a college for that reason only, but it really did turn me off. Now if only others would understand that...

OHKID -- that vibe your talking about.. is it a pre-professional, preppy type vibe? That's how the school seems to me reading reviews of it.

No, I think that "snobby white kids that have never had to lift a finger in their entire lives, racist, conservative, and way too much into material possessions and themselves" would best describe the vibe. Some of my family is alumnus from there, but they really didn't turn out like that. However, that is definitely the prevalent attitude. I guess a good way to sum it up politely is to call it its "vibe", because I always had to try and politely dodge the question by saying that I didn't like its "atmosphere". My family that attended school there would just give me a puzzled look and pressure me more, but that stopped when I said that my ACT was "above Miami". So, yes, the general vibe is snob, and I don't like snobby conservatives, since I have to deal with them all the time. Hope this helps, DuninLA.

OHKID -- yeah, that's also kind of what meant by Preppy, Pre Professional. :)

I don't like Miami either. My daughter is a down to earth hispanic, so we are taking it off her list. I've read a few things about their handling of diversity that concern me.

OP, with your stats, Case is likely to give you a lot of merit. I would make the decision between Case and OSU. I don't know how good a school Dayton is compared to OSU, but I think OSU would carry more weight in the engineering space.

Ohio State probably, unless Case gives you a offer similar to OSU's. The difference between Case and OSU is not enough to spend 40 grand on, in fact OSU is better in many areas. I would recommend UD is you were considering a different major.

You will get a great education at any of the schools. Go to the one that feels best to you. If you are not happy, the best program in the country is not a good choice. Visit the campuses - that will tell you a lot. My daughter is a freshman at UC and loves it there. She's in the College of Business. For her, it was exactly the right fit. Think about distance from home as well - what are you comfortable with? Size of the campus, weather, etc. It's about the whole package. Make sure you are looking at everything.

My cousin actually majors in biomedical engineering at Case. They have a great program there for it and they offered her a $20,000 scholarship, but her ACT was lower than that I believe. I think they would offer you a full ride there for sure. I would definitely go to Case. Also, at Case you do more one on one and my cousin says she just loves the location and the whole campus.

Good luck with whatever you choose and congratulations!

Definitely Case or OSU. Not sure where some are getting the justification for putting Dayton in their league. UD simply does not have anywhere near the faculty/research resources, and it's student selectivity is a definite step below that of Ohio State and certainly Case.

If OSU's size is a huge problem, then I could see that being the deciding factor. Otherwise go with OSU.

I would go with OSU just because of the sheer resources that you will have at your disposal will be comparable to Case, if not better. Also, in my opinion, the environment/ atmosphere is better at OSU. Im not knocking Case, because in a numbers game, Case wins hands down. It just sounds as though with OSU's financial incentives, it would not be worth the extra cash to attend Case. If you are concerned with the size of Ohio State, then the Honors Program (which i assume that you are in) will shrink the size of the university and provide you with more rigorous classes that will prepair for any post-graduate work.
