How my kinky hair (which is very unusual to have as a Korean) built a barrier between me and others everywhere I went (but I talk about a particular incident in elementary school, which was the starting point), and how it helped me become a person who can turn unfavorable circumstances into a chance for self-growth.

people and scenes I saw during the walk from a shopping mall to my house (in Malaysia): what I'm exposed to, living in a place where different cultures, religions, and lifestyles co-exist, and how it has taught me the importance of diversity.

The problem is my first one talks about an experience that's from waayyy back in time. What's worse, I heard "overcoming a challenge" (especially physical complex) as a college essay topic is overused.

The second one, which I haven't started yet, seems like a good topic. I heard adcom likes talking about how diversity has influenced the applicant. Not that I want to write something that adcom will find pleasing, but I feel like the essay, if done right, could take an ordinary life experience and turn it into something meaningful.

But I personally prefer the first one (with which I'm halfway done) because my hair, and what I learned from that experience, has been a HUGE part of my life. It has really molded me into the person I am today, and I think that makes the first essay more personal and, therefore, more appropriate.

So, what do you think? Should I stick to the first one, or go for the second one?
Any insight will be much appreciated!! :)
