I have gotten into James Madison, Christopher Newport, Mary Washington, and George Mason. Assuming I don't get into UVA or William & Mary, which would you choose? I honestly have no idea what I will do.

Tell us something about yourself. What are your interests, preferences, etc.? Give us something to go on. Why did you apply to those schools in the first place? What did you like about them?

Of those to which you have been accepted, James Madison is one you hear about that students really love.

I applied to those schools because I have to stay instate and I live in VA. I really don't know where I can picture myself out of any of them. The campuses are all nice (I've never been to CNU or Mason but I've heard they're pretty). I go to a relatively large high school now and I like the size, but I don't think I would particularly mind going to small college either. I'm so indecisive, it's problematic!

JMU by far, unless you want a really small school (then go to UMW)

JMU or George Mason.

Depends, small or large? I'm applying to most of those listed this fall. JMU is known for its party scene, and UMW is a lot smaller.

If you're looking for small, but good quality, go for UMW. If you want a big social scene, choose JMU. GMU is a good choice as well.

Christopher Newport is the only one on that list I'm not applying to, so I can't really tell you much about that one.

Might I suggest some more visits? Information sessions and tours may help you get a better feel of which college is right for you.

Also, consider your interests, your likes and dislikes. Make a chart or something on Excel, and list a bunch of qualities you want and see which one has the most. =3

A friend's kid is a freshman at Christopher Newport and is applying to transfer to VA Tech, finding CN "too easy," although I believe the kid does like the school. Kid was denied at Tech last year, making all As at CN this year.

bumpity bumpp?

I live in VA and have heard positive things about all of these schools. Mary Washington stands out as everyone that I know who goes there/has gone there seems to love it.
If you have time, it might be a good idea to make a quick visit to all of these schools, that might help in the decision. They are all good schools so you are in a no lose situation no matter which you choose. Congratulations and good luck!

Thanks a lot! Yeah i definitely have some deciding to do.

GMU is a commuter school where all the NoVa kids who didn't get in anywhere else or want to stay close to home go. JMU is a bit above UMW academically, but people at both schools love it (both have a skewed F/M ratio but Mary Washington is more imbalanced) and CNU is an OK school.

ok thanks..yeah GMU is basically out of the question. i could literally walk there. I think its basically going to end up being between JMU or Mary Washington.

That's the call that most prospective students with your choice would probably make. JMU is about twice as large as UMW and has a football program. Mary Washington is one of the top public liberal arts colleges in the country and is something like a smaller private campus at a in-state public price. JMU is a good place for outdoorsy types who would enjoy mountain outings; UMW is in a historic downtown.

As a son who has a father in VA, I applied to JMU and UMW. In HS i would have chosen JMU over UMW. But now, knowing what I like in a college, and don't like I would have put UMW ahead of JMU for these reasons:
Size-UMW is a great size
Faculty-UMW has smaller class sizes, and the faculty seems to be more engaged with the students than at JMU
Location:Its close to DC and close to Richmond. I could imagine that would come in handy very often.

Thanks a lot! Any other opinions?

As a parent I live right by CNU. CNU has a lot of students from NOVA. The dorms are incredible and some of the best. You are 45 minutes from Va Beach and a few minutes from Williamsburg. There is a lot of construction all around CNU. It is a small college and in an urban location. Lots of traffic right out your door. However, they supposedly have a good marketing program and music program there. Do you know what major you would like to pursue? That should help you decide also. JMU is a large school, lots of partying there, and about 60% female. Off campus housing is pretty cheap. It is a terrific college and everyone I know who has kids there really like it. MW is smaller, has a really nice campus also, and smaller class sizes. There are even more females there than JMU. I hear it is a nice college also. GMU is huge, very diverse student body, and offers a lot of majors. But, if you live near the school, I would think it would be a nice change to go away somewhere different. If I had to choose for my own children, I would go for JMU for my daughter and CNU for my son based on their interests and degrees they are pursuing. Neither my son nor daughter would like MW because there are so many females there. It feels more like an all girl school. CNU by all standards is not in the same league as JMU or GMU academically no matter what they tell you. I know students at all of these colleges and they are all happy with their choices. Good luck!

Thanks a lot!! That is very helpful. I am leaning towards JMU now but we'll see!

Anybody else?

jmu because gender imbalance is in my favor :)
