I’m a sophomore student and I am planning on touring colleges over the summer. My top four choices are UNF, UCF, FSU and FGCU (as a safety school.) I want to major in psychology. I haven’t gotten a C since the fourth grade so my GPA is above a three (idk how to calculate GPA) and I plan on doing dual enrollment and HCC starting in the fall. I really like UCF’s curriculum and it has a good reputation, but I don’t do well with big crowds (horrible social anxiety) so idk how well that would work out. UNF isn’t rated as highly as UCF, but it is smaller. I don’t know much about FSU, but Tallahassee is incredibly far from me and idk what kind of appliance they allow in the room ( I plan on cooking all my meals myself since I’m a vegan). FGCU is my “safety” college incase I don’t get into either of the 3 above, which seems a bit unlikely to me. I don’t know which will fit me better though. I’m pretty liberal and I’m an atheist. Which college do you think is right for me?

I do plan on applying for Bright Futures during senior year if I do well on my ACTs, so price may not be an issue.

The cafeterias have vegan offerings. There are some dorms at FSU that don’t require meal plans, but most schools (UNF) require freshmen to live in dorms AND buy a meal plan. If this is really important to you, check it out school by school before applying. My friend’s sons didn’t go to UNF because they require them to live in the dorms even though their mother lived in Jax.

Bright Futures doesn’t cover everything, usually about 1/2 tuition.

We are in t he Tampa area and have USF, but our son wants to go away for college and we applied to UA/FAU/UNF/USF. My son has chosen UNF. We never really heard of the school a year ago, but found out about while we did a search of Florida schools. We went to an open house and immediately determined it was the right school for him. It is a smaller school that has the feel of a private college. There are a relatively large number of students living on campus for its size 3000+. Dorms are ok to very good, and the prices are fair compared to the other colleges. Incoming freshman live in dorms (required) that only allow fridge and microwave. We find that the case with most of the Florida schools. Meal plan is required and that runs about $1600 per semester. We ate there for lunch and it was very very good. Different strokes for different folks. UCF and FSU are going to provide a totally different experience for some people. Academically, we are quite satisfied with UNF although UCF and FSU are going to be harder to get into…but not much harder. Look at the UNF stats.

I know that I’m required to buy the meal plan. I’m kind of ocd about people touching my food so I always cook myself. UNF costs a bit more than UCF, so I’m wondering if it’s worth the extra money. I think the academics are about the same, but I’ve heard UCF has a better reputation and is more well known.

Its about what you are looking for. Both schools offer completely different experiences for their students. Its about where you think you can be the most successful. UNF is getting academically competitive with USC/USF/FSU. Smaller school with less “distractions” may be what some people need.

The school I go to now is only 40 students, so a school with 60+ thousand people doesn’t sound like an easy adjustment. I think I’m leaning toward UNF at this point. I guess I’ll figure out after I tour them both.

Academically, for your intended major, UNF is close enough to UCF for it not to make much of a difference. The same with cost. You should feel free to let “FIT” play a significant role in choosing between these two great schools.

Merit aid (in-state) is about the same at both schools, as it tuition, dorms, etc. How much merit aid you get awarded, may help you make your determination.

UNF is a bit more of a commuter school (a higher % of students live at home), this is the reason behind the requirement to live on campus the first year. This is a good thing, as your first year living on campus (at UCF or UNF) will allow you to build your circle of friends. With that being said, I do have several nephews and nieces (one a psych major) who got out of the housing requirement due to “dietary” restrictions. However, they grew up in Jacksonville, so already had a large number of friends that also attend UNF.

After you take your visits, post any questions you have in the college’s forums. You can’t lose with any of these schools.:-bd

Good Luck!

I would like to share some info with other parents about our experience with FAU. My daughter was admitted to USF and UCF but chose FAU because she did not get into FSU and wanted to go away from Tampa for college. Every interaction we have had with every office on campus has been superb! Admissions, Housing, Advising etc…all very professional and customer focused. My daughter moved into Parliament which is really the nicest dorm I have ever seen anywhere. She joined a sorority and has made many friends. The beach, high end shopping and dining, lots of things to do on campus and in Boca. (if money is an issue though, maybe not the best place for you)
The school, despite the change in Univ. President, seems to be focused on making FAU the best it can be. Supplemental instruction is available for most courses along with free tutoring for calculus and other math courses. My daughter was hesitant to go there because some people claimed it was like the “13th year of high school.” This has not been her experience at all and as a parent I would tell others considering FAU for your student, it’s a good choice!! Better than USF for sure! (Speaking as an alumna!)
