Hi, I am not sure which one I should apply to.
I am not a citizen, but I have a green card.
I have been living in Texas for four years.
Thank you for helping :)

I don’t think you’re eligible for any federal aid (FAFSA) if you are not a U.S. citizen. Not sure about Texas state aid (TASFA).

Permanent residents(green card holders) are eligible to file FAFSA and get federal aid.

https://fafsa.ed.gov/help/fotw15a.htm

you need to submit both!

Ah, thank you. Learning has occurred.

I don’t believe both are needed. I think TAFSA is for those classified as Texas residents but not eligible to file FAFSA. The OP should be eligible to file FAFSA.

Thank you all so much!

But just to be sure, ask a guidance counselor at your HS.

I did. She told me that I can only apply to TASFA, but most people told me that I can apply to FAFSA. That is why I am very confused. Thank you for helping.

Do you have a social security number? If so and are a green card holder, per the link above, you should be eligible to file FAFSA.

Did you tell her that:
See http://www.finaid.txstate.edu/more-info/TASFA.html

@4kidsdad
I did tell her that, but she told me FAFSA is only for citizens.

Have her visit this webpage: https://studentaid.ed.gov/eligibility

My brother has a green card and he got FAFSA. He had resided in Texas for a year or 2 before applying for FAFSA, although he was in Massachusetts for longer than that.

There are a lot of non-citizens eligible for federally-determined financial aid:
- Green card holders
- I94 holders with status Refugee, Asylum, or some other less frequent I94 statuses
- T-visa for victims of human trafficking
- Citizens of Micronesia, Palau or similar US dependencies

DACA students can file the FAFSA, but it is not used for federal financial aid.

The OP with a green card is every bit as eligible as a citizen would be.

Thank you guys so much. Now I know I can apply to FAFSA, but can I also apply to TASFA?

My reading of the links provided is that you only file one or the other depending on whether you are eligible to file FAFSA. Since you’re eligible to file FAFSA, you don’t need TAFSA. They just want your financial info from one of the forms, not both. There isn’t an advantage to filing both and I would think FAFSA is preferred when eligible.

Thank you very much. I will apply to FAFSA next month.
